CLEO R. MURRAY FAMILY MESSAGE

I am happy to see this genealogy exchange site! Thank you for this page where we can share!
My quest is particularly focused on Cleo R. MURRAY, son of James David MURRAY and Lydia Hannah (METCALF) Murray. He (Cleo) remained in the area until his death on 31 October, 1937.
He was the husband of Hazel (WYLAND) Murray.
He is the only one of the twelve children of James & Lydia (Metcalf) Murray for whom I cannot record a precise birth date but the census gives July of 1899.
Does anyone relate to this couple and did he have any children?
Has anyone seen an obituary for Cleo Murray?
I do have a great deal of information on the MURRAY family, if interested.
I am the daughter of Genevieve O. MURRAY of Whiting, Iowa; but I live in California.
Please contact me to share family history.
I enjoyed my visit to Anthon via the web pages.

WANAMAKER FAMILY

Greetings:
I am looking for information concerning my great grandfather, Nelson Wanamaker, who was BORN:in 1842 in New York and who DIED: in Anthon, Iowa in 1919.
Nelson (known as Nels) was reportedly MARRIED: to Katherine Emmet, though other records indicate her name was Catherine Endlich. I have no further information concerning the locations of her birth or death.
Specifically, is there anywhere listed a city of Nelson's birth in New York, and is there further information about his father, Peter Wanamaker, also born a New Yorker?
Many thanks for your assistance. You have a fascinating website.

FRANKLIN P. or MARY J. BARKER

I am requesting a look-up for these persons who may be buried or died in Woodbury County, IA
Franklin P. Barker (born about 1852) and Mary J. Barker (born about 1853)
They were originally from my area of Indiana and are listed in the U.S. Census from 1910-1930. They may possibly be buried in Woodbury County, Iowa.
They also, had daughter, Lois Barker , that was murdered near here in 1909. She may have been exhumed and re-buried in Iowa?
Would appreciate any assistance, and would also appreciate information where I may find listings of cemeteries for Woodbury County.

Sincerely yours,

I am seeking any info beyond what I have to date. Seeking Blenderman info. Peter Blenderman Born 1872 .

They had 2 daughters.
Gertrude Born 1894. and
Hazel Born 1898. in Anthon

Gertrude, married, Nels Nelson...one child I can find to date.
Owen Nelson: Born???

Hazel married, James Burke one child I can find.
Virginia Mae Burke

Any assistance would help find lost family.
I am certain that Anthon is a wonderful place as my father talked very warmly of it as he lived there as little boy before moving to California.

My father was born at Anthon in 1916. His father died in 1925 when he was about 9 years old.
My Grandmother then married Cloyd Hayworth from the Anthon area and the family moved to California.
It took me 7 years to find I had my last name spelled wrong. As it was spelled LorenZEN as opposed to "Sen" -which I grew up with.
I hope to visit one day and meet your wonderful community and all that live there. It sounds like a great place to grow up. I know my father was happy to be from there.

I hope to get to Anthon some day and work on the LorenZEN and Blenderman families there.
My roots go back to the 1880's there at Anthon and I really want to know what my Great-Granddad and my Granddad viewed there.
Thank You

HINDS /BEESON

I am looking for information on a HINDS family that lived in the Oto and Anthon area. Josephine Beeson married Isaac Hinds in about 1907. They had four children that I know of.
Oliver who died December 1985,
Marvin who died January 9, 2000,
Harold who died June 1985 and
Helen who was born about 1913 of whom I know nothing.

Harold's wife was Rosella and she died in September 1987
I know that Marvin is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Anthon. The others may be buried there also I don't know.

I am seeking a descendent of this family to learn about that family's history; especially the matriarch Josephine Beeson. Hopefully someone in Anthon knows of this family.
I would also like to know if there is anything published on the cemeteries in your area.
Josephine's brother was Maurice Jerry Beeson who died in 1951. He is buried in St. Mary's in Oto Township.
Thank you so much. Please contact me by e-mail at:

BARR / PATTON

I am searching for an AUNT of a Miss Lill Barr who on her immigration form stated that she was "going to Smithland,Iowa to see an Aunt (no name)."
The Aunt's maiden name could be either BARR or PATTON. The immigration form states that this Aunt (Barr or Patton) was coming to Smithland,Iowa to work. She does appears in the 1900 Census living with a Parkhill family - but they are not related to her.
One of Lill Barr's granddaughters remembers Lill saying that her Aunt was from Anthon not Smithland.
I have communicated with a great granddaughter of the Parkhill family from Smithland where Lill worked and they are not related nor do they know who the aunt was.
Family lore given to me by Lill's great granddaughter says the Aunt lived in Anthon.
The question is whether there was a Barr or Patton family living in the Anthon area around 1900? This does assume that the aunt is a sister to Lill's father or mother.;

Lill Barr married a Thomas Doyle in 1901 (not verified yet).
Around 1914 (???), they moved to Onida, Sully, South Dakota.
I'd appreciate and help or suggestions in pursuing the answers.
Thanks,

SMITH FAMILY Possibly the Samuel R. Smith family circa: unknown

I have attached a copy of a photo. I believe the family is the SAMUEL R. & MARY A. (EDWARDS) SMITH FAMILY I don't know the year this was taken or who the kids are.
I presume that his parents; GILBERT AND MARIA (HOLCOMB) SMITH were living in the area of Anthon or Correctionville.
I do not have parents names for Gilbert or Maria. Although GILBERT'S parents were born in New York or Conneticut and MARIA'S parents in NY/CT I found a date of death for either Maria's mother or Maria herself as 20 July 1935.
GILBERT SMITH dob: 1818-New York ; MARIAH or MARIA (HOLCOMB)born:1828 in Ohio. . I have no death date for either of them much less where they died. I presume in Iowa. GILBERT AND MARIA (HOLCOMB) SMITH'S children were:
SAMUAL R. (B)Sept. 11, 1855 Dubuque, Iowa; died: Jan 22, 1939 Anthon, IA
CHARLES:
ANNA
JEREMIAH
RANDOLPH
EDWIN
AUGUSTUS
MARIA
HULDAH
WEALTHY
MARY

How correct this is I don't know.
I figured GILBERT SMITH may have passed sometime between 1886 and 1900.
In 1880 GILBERT AND MARY (HOLCOMB) SMITH lived in Union Township, Woodbury Co. IA.
At the time GILBERT was 63 and MARIA 52.

SAMUAL R SMITH married MARY A. EDWARDS in Kansas.
Any info will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Karen Bye

PEARCE FAMILY

What a wonderful surprise today.......I was looking for my great-grandfather Levi Pearce, and googled my way into Mary Haunreiter's grandmother's diary....My grandmother was Bessie Pearce, who married Ernest West in Canada. I am the daughter of their son Donald West.....I was trying to find out for my aunt Ruth (the last living child of Ernest and Bessie, if Levi Pearce was previously married before he married Olive. Does anyone happen to have that information?
Ruth is now 86 and I would love to share this information with her. I will certainly pass on the wonderful photo of Bessie and her brother Harry...Our family has the other photo of Levi's family in our possession......
Would love to hear from Mary Haunreiter so we can ascertain how many "cousins' removed" we might be.

ARNOLD FAMILY - WILLETT / STURGES FAMILY

I would greatly appreciate any and all help. Tho I do have numerous families that I would love to research, at this time, there are only 2 that I must spend the most time on.
One is the: ARNOLD FAMILY , I know a lot of them are buried at the Oto Cemetery, but there are others, in different cemeteries. I would appreciate any and all info on them.
The second one is: The WILLETT FAMILY from Woodbury. Anna Willett nee Sturges and her husband.
Anna is my GrGr Aunt, daughter of my GrGrGrandfather, she was born in IL. Any and all info on this family line would be greatly appreciated.
I know that both Anna, her husband and their daughter Freda W Dyer and her husband are all buried in the Floral Hill Cemetery. I am also trying to search to see for both families, if there are any living decendents there? I have been searching since 1970, after the death of my dear Grandmother. Her third husband gave away all family belongs, ie, family bible, pictures, address books, etc. So we have had basically nothing but some memories and family stories to go on. A 1885 bio on Kane Co., IL yielded Anna's name and her husband. We do know that at one time he was a banker, and also sold real estate.
Hope this helps. Thank you kindly.
Kind reguards,
Martha El-Maguid in CA MAY 2007

PEIRO BETHEL CEMETERY QUERY -

I grew up in Grant Township, Woodbury County and I was a member of Peiro Bethel Church as a child and a youth. I was baptized at Bethel Church. I read the list of grave sites in Bethel Cemetery and one of the listings is for a Dicks infant, child of L.L. and with the notation to ask the sexton for information.

I had a goodly number of relatives in the area; however, I don't know who L.L. Dicks might be in our family.
If anyone has any further information can you share it with me?
I enjoy the Anthon web page and I wrote in the memories section.
Thank you in advance

GARDNER - JONES - STONE - THRALL - WORDEN QUERY

My mother, JUNE EILEEN THRALL was born on June 1, 1922 in her paternal grandfather's farmhouse in Woodbury County, Iowa. His name was ARTHUR A. THRALL. Mother always said she was born at Anthon, but her birth certificate says Danbury, Iowa.

June's father, WILLIAM McKINLEY THRALL, was born at Smithland in 1896 and married AMY AMANDA MICKLE in Red Oak, Iowa on February 1920. The story is told that Amy was a teacher who boarded with the Thrall family. Perhaps after the early, unexpected death of his mother NELLIE THRALL in April of 1928, William moved his wife, children and father with him to Tulare County, California. Are there any newspaper articles or stories?

June's paternal grandfather,ARTHUR AMBROSE THRALL was born November 21, 1870, and married NELLIE GERALDINE JONES in Sioux City in 1895. Arthur was a farmer and raised hogs. The story goes that they lived in the Anthon area until Nellie's death in April 1928. Arthur later married ELLA _?_ and he later died in Arkansas, but he is buried with Nellie at Smithland, Iowa. Are the graves still standing and readable? Are there any newspaper articles? Does anyone know the names of Arthur Thrall's parents?

Nellie Thrall's parents were ALBERT (A.C.) AND FRANCES ANNE (STONE) JONES . Frances was first married to Albert's brother CLAY JONES and had a son named ALTON JONES . After a divorce she married Albert and had two children NELLIE and FRED.
Is there any record of Albert Jones' death or burial?
Frances later married a MR. BOWERS . Does anyone know his first name? I think Frances Anne Stone Jones Bowers is buried at Smithland.
Are there cemetery records? Is her stone standing? Are there dates of birth and death? Are there any newspaper records of her death?

June's paternal great-grandfather might have been GEORGE WASHINGTON THRALL (sometimes spelled with an s at the end) who was born in 1849 and married MARY _?_ who was born in 1852. Is there any record of them in the cemetery listings or newspapers? Are stones still standing and readable? What are their dates of death?

I think June's paternal great-great grandfather was also named ARTHUR A. THRALL He died in 1901 and I think he might be buried in Little Sioux Cemetery along with his wife LYDIA _?_ who died in 1882. Are there any cemetery records? Are their stones still standing and readable?

June's mother was born AMY AMANDA GARDNER in January 1898. I think Amy's mother, MARTHA (WORDEN) GARDNER died in late 1899 or early 1900 after the birth of a fourth child. Are there any cemetery records or obituaries for Martha Gardner who was born about 1876?

Amy's father, HARRY A. GARDNER was listed in Rock Township in the 1900 census. His birth date was written as May 1869. He seems to have left his four children with his deceased wife's parents in Maple Township, Ida County, as documented in the 1900 census. Harry was living in Oto Township at the time of the 1920 census. Are there any cemetery records for Harry Gardner who was born in May 1869? He later married RHONDA _?_ .

ANY HELP would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Carol Kensel
Edmonds, WA

My grandfather..GARLAND PARKER was born in Anthon in 1889. His wife/my grandmother's name is KATHRYN or KATIE SANDERS and she is buried next to Grandpa in Anthon.

Hello, I tried to email Barbra Parker-Brannen directly, from the genealogy page, but her email address is no longer valid. I would appreciate it if you would add my response to her posting. Thanks so much! Also, it is okay with me if you post my name (Wee) and email address.

Hello neighbor -- I also live in Las Vegas Am posting here because my email to you bounced back.
I did a quick search and found some info for you.
It appears that Kathryn & Garland were married about 1920. Kathryn for sure, was married once before, to a Sanders, so Sanders would be her former married name.

D.W. HUFFMAN'S obituary AND WIFE ALMEDA HUFFMAN'S Newspaper obituary is as follows:

MRS. D.W. HUFFMAN is Dead
Last Thursday morning Mrs. D.W. Huffman, five miles northwest of town,[Anthon]passed away (August 22, 1912) after an illness of several days. Her condition had not been considered alarming until a short time before she expired. The funeral was held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Rock Branch church, services were conducted by Rev. Chas. Yotter and interment made in the adjoining cemetery. The large concourse of people present at the funeral plainly told the high esteem in which this excellent lady was held by her neighbors and acquaintances. The church was by far too small to hold the crowd gathered to pay a last tribute to one who in life had made the world better for her having been a part of it.
Almeda Louisa Rinehart was born at Peoria, Ill., Jan. 1, 1858. In 1865 she moved to Macedonia, Iowa, with her parents. Eleven years later she was united in marriage to D.W. Huffman, who with eleven sons and three daughters remain to mourn. One daughter died in infancy. All of the children but Harry and Albert of Elk Washington were at her bier. Three sisters, Mrs. M.D. Grooms of Anthon, Mrs. Rosealtha Plum of Henderson, Iowa and Mrs. Minnie Bivin of St. Edward, Nebraska are all that remains of her parents family.
Mrs. Huffman's life was a tribute that cannot be added to or diminished. Her existence was spent for her family and what a noble sacrifice it was. Fourteen bright, strong children, everyone of whom possesses a clear mind and a strong physique. It is given to but very few mothers to thus honor the world; to give a life's work to such a noble cause; to bless humanity as she has done. The bereft family though bowed low with grief must feel a great gratitude and consolation that such a woman was their mother. She was a kind neighbor and found time in her busy life to lend a helping hand to those in need of succor.

*****
CARD OF THANKS: We wish to extend our most heartfelt thanks to the many kind neighbors and friends for their assistance and sympathy in our recent bereavement.

FORMER ROCK BRANCH RESIDENT DROPPED DEAD

The death of DAVID W. HUFFMAN , a resident of the Rock Branch community from 1882 to 1918 occurred at Wall, South Dakota, the first of April. His death came very suddenly. He had been down town and on his return home dropped dead on the sidewalk in the business section of the town. While it was an easy death for him, it was a terrible shock to his many friends and to his loved ones, especially to his daughter, Mrs. Rogers in Wall and who Mr. Huffman was making his home with.
Mr. Huffman lived about three miles south of Rock Branch and upon leaving here a few years ago to make his home with the daughter in South Dakota, left a good many staunch and true friends behind.
DAVID W. HUFFMAN [died March 31, 1924.] The body was shipped to Moville, Iowa soon after the death occurred and funeral services, under the supervision of Rev. M. J. McCabe, were conducted at the Rock Branch church on April 3rd. Mr. Huffman is survived by three daughters and 11 sons and numerous other relatives.

Here is another obituary from the HUFFMAN family that Ron Thompson has shared with us: it is the obituary of ARTHUR HUFFMAN RON THOMPSON'S GREAT GRANDFATHER.

Headline from the Anthon Herald Newspaper; 1945.

Here is another obituary from the HUFFMAN / SADLER family that Ron Thompson has shared with us: it is the obituary of MINNIE (HUFFMAN) SADLER RON THOMPSON'S Great-great Aunt.(a sister to Ron's Great-great Grandfather ARTHUR HUFFMAN.

Moville, Iowa - MRS. MINNIE SADLER, 89 of Moville died Thursday [April 16, 1984] after a long illness. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday in the United Methodist Church in Rock Branch. The Rev Vernon Aarnes will officiate. Burial will be in Fairfield Cemetery under the direction of the McCulloch-Wavrin Funeral Home in Moville.
Mrs. Sadler, the former MINNIE HUFFMAN, was born April 14, 1894, in Rock Branch. She married JESS SADLER on Feb. 3, 1915, in Rock Branch. He preceded her in death. She lived her entire life in the Rock Branch and Moville area.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. BRUCE (EVELYN) TURNER of Moville; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Ron Thompson continues with his family history, stating:

"My research into genealogy has told me things my mother (LORNA (JERMAN) THOMPSON did not know. On the Anthon website is some photos of J.O.JERMAN'S barn after a storm.
JOSEPH OLIVER JERMAN was the son of OLIVER JERMAN.
OLIVER was French Canadian of Irish Catholic decent.
OLIVER and a brother PETER JERMAN (Sr.) came to the Duebuque, Iowa area around 1835-1840.
At some point while living in eastern Iowa PETER JERMAN turned Methodist and became the family outcast.
PETER JERMAN had 3 son's.
THOMAS JERMAN, who died as an infant,
JOSEPH ALBERT JERMAN and
PETER JERMAN (JR.)-born after his father died in a well cave-in.

JOSEPH ALBERT JERMAN married MARY JANE BALLOU.
MARY JANE'S MOTHER had married for a second time and her second husband was a SADLER - they basically created the Sadler clan of the Rock Branch /Anthon area.

The two Jerman boys of Peter Jerman Sr.(JOSEPH & PETER Jr.) had another tragedy when their mother died. Peter was one year old at the time and the two boys were raised by their mother's brother THOMAS FLATHERS.

These families all moved to Woodbury County Iowa about the same time, which was around 1870's.
PETER Jr. would move on to Nebraska.
His brother JOSEPH ALBERT stayed in Woodbury County, near Rock Branch and helped get the Methodist Church at Rock Branch started.

Three years before he died, JOSEPH ALBERT went back to the family farm in eastern Iowa and located the graves of his parents and brother Thomas and had them properly placed and marked in a cemetery. (apparently the back yard was no longer good enough)

Peter and Joseph's Uncle OLIVER JERMAN and family helped get the Catholic Church in Anthon started.

JOSEPH ALBERT JERMAN had several children, one of them being WILLIAM JERMAN.
WILLIAM JERMAN
married HELEN STAUFUL.
They were the parents of three children:
GEORGE,
MARIE,
AND
FRANK .
When GEORGE was 12 years old his father WILLIAM died and the children's mother HELEN (STAUFUL) JERMAN ran off to California never to be heard from again.
George's Grandmother; MARY JANE JERMAN and uncle FRANK JERMAN
ended up raising the children. Uncle FRANK never married and farmed. FRANK JERMAN passed away on July 18, 1943 at the home of his niece, MARIE JERMAN HUFFMAN in Anthon. He is buried at Rock Branch Cemetery."

Thank you again Ron Thompson for sharing so much of your family history!

LOWTHER - TOMLINSON

ANN WALKER LOWTHER married SAMUEL C. TOMLINSON around 1900 to 1903.
I am trying to find out if Ann's last three children were fathered by SAMUEL TOMLINSON.
They would be CLIFFORD TOMLINSON, MADGE TOMLINSON AND BERNICE TOMLINSON.
Were births always documented at that time? I know that there were no birth certificates for my two sisters who were born in Harrison County Iowa in 1932 and 1934.
Any help is appreciated.
Please e-mail me: SHARON L BROWN

TOMLINSON

My father was born in 1889 in Anthon Iowa. Of this I am pretty sure.
His mother was CARRIE HAWKES TOMLINSON.
There were three siblings older than my father.
His father was SAMUEL C. TOMLINSON.
I think my father's mother died when he was born or shortly thereafter.
His sister was HARRIET MAE (TOMLINSON) WILSEY, husband WILLIAM WILSEY and on the 1900 census my grandfather SAMUEL TOMLINSON was living with WILLIAM AND MAE WILSEY and listed as a widower.
How do I access county records to see how my father got sent to the Annie Wittenmeyer Home in Davenport, Iowa - when and why.
This would have to be done through the County I think. I would like documentation of his birth, his mother's death, and when and why he went to the home. Thank you so much.
Please e-mail me: SHARON L BROWN

COON FAMILY

I am looking for any information or photographs or references to the Coon families that lived in the Anthon/Oto/Correctionville area from the 1850's to the present.
I already have quite a lot of information on this line but am always interested in knowing more about the people than just DOB, DOD, etc.
I am descended from George W. Coon who was married to Elizabeth Skinner and farmed in the area. My father was born there in 1914. My Coon family was fairly prominent in the area for quite a number of years. Many intermarriages with Andersons, Hayworths, and other families that came down from Wisconsin.

PRIDGEON - WILCOX - WALLING

A relative and I are doing research on the Pridgeon and Wilcox family . The other lady found an item in the Anthon Herald newspaper Dated May 14, 1940: "Graves of Boys buried 70 years ago Discovered"
"The graves of two children Richard B. Pridgeon and David E. Wilcox buried about 70 years ago, were found in the backyard of the Mrs. Clara Walling farm south of Anthon recently, while her two sons Maurice and Edwin were doing some grading ."
There is more to the article: "one boy, David Wilcox, was buried Oct 7, 1867 age 1yr and 2 months.
Richard Pridgeon died July 28 1871 , at the age of 2 yrs and 18 days.
I am wondering if you have any way to contact any of the Walling family? I believe there were some around Anthon last year. I would like to know if they know exactly where this farm is: in what township etc.etc.
Does their family still own the land or do they know who does?
I will not be bothering anyone about seeing it as I live in Hot Springs , SD and would not be there.
My grandfather was the brother of Richard Pridgeon.
Thank You for any information anyone may be able to find .

EARL FAMILY OF OTO, WELLS FAMILY OF OTO

Hello-my father's family was from Oto. I have never visited, but in 2006, my wife and I are going to travel to Oto. I'm writing to see if any records exist on my family when they lived there. Here's what I know:
My Grandfather was Francis Fremont Earl.
He married Mary Aline Maddox (Mattox?).
[Mary Aline's mother was Jenny Wells.]

Mary Aline had a brother who had a hot temper...he threw a pot of hot potatoes at someone in Oto at one time. It made the gossip rounds there.

I recall the name Harvey Earl. Not sure who he was.

Francis and Mary had three sons.
Glenn Maddox (Mattox) Earl...born in 1898(?)-died in 1965- buried in Newhall, California
Charles Francis Earl...born in 1902 -buried in San Diego, California
Dalton Claire Earl..born in 1918
Francis, Mary, and their three sons moved to Venice, California approx 1918/1919

Glenn Earl had two sons;Richard Lovelace Earl and Charles Earl. They are both deceased and buried in California.

My father was Charles Earl who died when I was 19.
Dalton is still alive and living in a suburb of Seattle, WA but has gone blind.

Francis and Mary Earl are buried in Santa Monica, CA.

I have pictures of an "Earl Livery" stable, and also pictures of Francis, Mary, Glenn, and Charles when they lived in Oto.
When my wife and I visit Oto we would like to know if any records exist on my family there and if there is a record of where they lived in town. My father said it was near the shores of the Little Sioux River.
Please pass this info on to anyone who might have information on my family or who would want this information.
see you in 2006.
