Anthon is located in northwest Iowa, in Woodbury County. Anthon is approximately 30 miles southeast of Sioux City, Iowa, bisected by State Highway 31 and county road D-38.A good school district and a main street with solid businesses make Anthon a very inviting place for new growth industry, new families, or just a nice place to visit.
The area residents enjoy the tranquility of living in the "Little Sioux Valley." The east edge of Anthon is along the west bank of the Little Sioux River. Residents enjoy the year-around beauty of the abundant fish, wildlife, tree-lined hills, and valleys. From the many Indian artifacts found in and around Anthon, you can tell today's area residents were not the first to enjoy what nature has to offer.
Anthon held its centennial celebration in 1988.Woodbury County's LITTLE SIOUX PARK and SOUTHWOOD PARK along with several county owned public hunting, fishing, and river access areas bring people to the area, and community throughout the year. Some of the county owned areas close to Anthon, and located in the "Little Sioux Valley" would be; Walling River Access, Shagbark Hills Area, Oak Ridge, Little Sioux Greenbelt, Inkpaduta Historical Marker and Access, Fowler Forest Preserve, Curtin Timber, and Copeland Park Access.
The Loess Hills are at our finger tips and the beautiful scenery in any direction from Anthon allows for a pleasant day trip on the back roads with car or bike.
Area residents also enjoy the newly constructed ANTHON GOLF CLUB a nine hole golf course just south of the Anthon city limits on Highway 31. It is a gorgeous golf course which was built with an "all volunteer" community labor force.
The spotlight also shines on the area farmers. There are many who work long, hard hours to raise corn, soybeans, oats, straw, hay, and other small grains. Some have diversified their farming operations to include seasonal, fresh produce such as sweet corn, melons, and other garden farming produce, as well as hydroponic farm operations. Some enjoy raising fruits as well; all work very hard to produce quality products for the farmer's markets, roadside stands, area grocery stores, and eating establishments. The newest avenue for diversification in the area is a new vineyard that was begun in 2000. Growing grapes in the Loess Hills area of western Iowa had its start in the late 1800's early 1900's, but prohibition, put all vineyards and wineries out of business. They are making a come back and those who began production are very committed to their crops and putting high quality products on the market in the next few years. There are many farm families and rural residents who raise livestock such as beef, pork, buffalo, chickens, goats, sheep, turkey, and horses as well as grain crops such as corn, popcorn, soybeans, hay, oats, grapes, as well as vegetables sold at area farmer's markets. All the area farmers and rural residents help support our businesses on main street in Anthon and surrounding communities, as well as the home based businesses in the area.
The Little Sioux Valley is blessed with an abundance of craftspeople and artists with varying fields of interest and talent! Their works are sold wholesale, and retail, as well as at tradeshows, craftfairs, juried art shows, and through the artists themselves. The Little Sioux Valley area and the surrounding towns of Oto, Correctionville, Pierson, Cushing, Battle Creek, Ida Grove, Danbury, Smithland, Rodney, Climbing Hill, Moville, and Mapleton are home to a diverse group of people with strong work ethics and a sense of looking out for their neighbors.
