Look At Her Go!
Mallory Bradley - Drag Racing Since Sixth Grade!
by Nathan Christophel
Managing EditorESTHERVILLE, IOWA —Mallory Bradley is a girl. There’s nothing she can do to get around it.
The Estherville Lincoln Central sophomore plays volleyball, dances and is a Girl Scout. She has girlfriends a boyfriend and not one hair wasn’t out of place on her head Friday afternoon.
She has another pastime, though, that nobody seems to believe.
“They’re like ‘No. No you don’t. You’re a girl,’” Mallory said about some of her classmates.
If this story isn’t enough to convince people, well, she encourages anyone to come see her car if they don’t think it’s true.
Mallory drag races.
Yes, drag races.
It might be at a junior competition level right now, but it’s definitely true. She’s got the car with all the safety precautions and the crew—her parents Dale and Susie and her boyfriend Nick Loftis—to back it up.
Mallory even boasts one of the highest speeds in junior drag racing at 91.87 miles per hour. Her father said most cars run in the 60-plus-mile-per-hour range while Mallory usually runs between 80-90.
Her fastest recorded time on the one-eighth mile tracks is 7.42 seconds and she has eight wins under her belt and three “King of the Hill” victories.
Most of her racing is done in Cedar Falls, Eddyville and, closer yet, Humboldt. The family plans to travel to more tracks in 2008 and perhaps to a national event in Denver.
Mallory has been racing since July 11, 2003, when she earned her Junior Dragster Competition licenses from the Eddyville raceway at age 11 as a sixth-grader.
And she hasn’t looked back.
“She’s been tagging along since Susie was carrying her,” Dale said. “I’ve been in motorsports most of my life.”
Dale helped his brother Doug who used to drag race. He also was involved in tractor pulling from the time he was 16 years old. He and Doug shared a bond in motorsports.
“I always someday wanted to have my own chassis shop,” Dale said. It hasn’t materialized yet, but he added “it’s coming.”
So with her uncle’s, father’s and family friend Don Mustard’s help, plus a little from Haddock Ltd. Metro racing engines, she was able to get started in the junior drag racing program.
“We went to Humboldt all the time when I was younger,” Mallory said. “It caught my eye and it looked really cool.”
She and her family travel to between 30-50 races each year from April to late October, depending on the weather. Humboldt is a favorite stomping ground for them where Mallory normally competes against a possible 14 other racers in junior competition. There are divisional meets, however, that can showcase as many as 400 cars, including the one in Denver the family hopes to get to in the future.
“We have a lot of fun,” Dale said.
And each member of the family has their job to do. Mallory, obviously, sits in and drives the car. Dale is mostly responsible for maintenance of the car, with a little of Nick’s help. Susie makes sure the family’s lunches are ready, reservations are made, vehicles are packed . . .
“Pays for us to get in,” Mallory continued.
“I do all the mental stuff,” Susie said. “They do all the physical.”
“I’m just the starter,” Nick chimed in, garnering a chuckle from the family. They know he’s much more than that.
Nick didn’t find out about his girlfriend’s racing hobby until after they started dating but enjoys helping and attending races.
“It is pretty fun,” he said.
“And he had no choice,” Dale kidded. “I needed his help.”
It takes a whole team effort. Preparations leading up to races also take the entire team. Dale spends a lot of time during the week checking the car, nicknamed Joyride—from the chassis to the engine, oil and any other signs of possible fatigue.
Mallory said her dad’s usually working on Friday, Saturday before they leave for the race and while they’re there. Dale added then it’s probably Sunday through Friday that he’s working on the car after a race.
“On Mountain Dew and coffee,” he joked.
Even if any of the rest of them had a chance to step in for Mallory instead of focusing on their respective jobs on the team, she probably wouldn’t let them.
“It’s just really fun,” she said. “It feels really good, that adrenaline rush. It’s just really exciting.”
It’s an exciting sport, but also one with a certain level of danger involved. Vehicles moving at such high speeds in a short amount of time can cause a lot of problems.
Safety is a top concern for Mallory and her crew.
“As a father, there are some reservations in putting your child in that situation,” Dale said but added that Mallory’s car probably is more safe than any street-legal vehicle.
The drag car, first and foremost, is very small. Mallory said there’s not much room to move around while she’s driving. Dale added the car’s chassis is designed to coccoon the driver.
Joyride also is equipped with a roll-bar and Susie is in charge of buckling her daughter in with the car’s five-point harness.
“It’s kind of nerve-racking, but she’s surrounded by safety,” Susie said. “And I make sure my child is strapped in well.”
And while she enjoys the ride, Mallory said she’s had butterflies on several ocassions.
“I’m nervous sometimes,” she admitted.
But that doesn’t stop her from climbing in the car each race. Friends giving her a hard time because of her hobby can’t stop her from racing.
“It doesn’t bother me,” Mallory said.
“You enjoy beating the boys, though,” Susie said with a chuckle.
“I’ve beaten quite a few of them,” Mallory said. “But we’re friends in the end.”
She has two years left in junior competition. If she wants to, after reaching the age of 18, she can move into the Super competition level—full-size drag racers that can go as fast as 130 miles per hour.
Whether or not she does is still up in the air.
“Dad and I are up for it,” Mallory said. “But Mom’s not.”
Susie thought about it for just a minute.
“Ask me in two years,” she said.

A trip to Ireland brought together a family after being separated with no contact for close to a century.Granddaughters of James and Elizabeth (Maguire) Cunningham, (and daughters of Harry and Marcella (Cunningham) Wood would be the ones to end the "lost connection" between the family after so many years.
The special 10-day trip to tour Ireland and just seeing the "homeland" of their Grandfather Jim Cunningham is what spurred the sisters.
Julie Nissen, of Lakewood, CO, a great granddaughter, had the desire to try and find family members still living in Ireland. Right before they were to leave on their trip, Julie heard from someone who "had the same names of people that they had" in their family history, and everyone agreed that they just might be "cousins, even if it was 2nd cousins!"
Mary (Wood) Nissen, of Anaheim, California; Marlene (Wood) Petersen of Tilden, NE; Ruth (Wood) Groth of Anthon; and Marlene's daughter Bev Petersen of Torrance, California traveled together and met another sister Margaret (Wood) Nissen, of Cushing, Iowa, her husband Gerold, daughter Julie Nissen and her friend Lisa Bonderson in Ireland.
They had been contacted by cousin Larry Cunningham and found out that his youngest brother, Colm Cunningham, owns the farm that the girl's Grandpa Jim Cunningham was born and raised on near Clara, Ireland. Arrangements were made to meet the cousins when the girls arrived and on September 17, 2002, sixteen relatives from America and Ireland were dinner guests of cousin Larry Cunningham at the Bridge House in Tullamore, County Offaly, Ireland. The meeting was so special that cousin Larry had the Bridge House print special menus welcoming the American cousins and the Bridge House went farther yet, in preparing a special "feast" for the group as well.
The relationships here of the Cunningham cousins began with Tom and Lucy (Keegan) Cunningham on their farm near Clara in County Offaly, Ireland. The couple had nine children; Jim, who was the cause of this long separation with his trip to America (and the Grandfather of the Wood sisters;) Mary, Bridget, Joseph, Thomas, Margaret, Lucy, Elizabeth and Alice.
The separation between the families began back in 1900 when son Jim Cunningham then 26 years old, came to the United States from Ireland. He came to the Danbury area and went to work for John Keegan, another Irishman, at his bank in Danbury. Jim, being a farm boy in the old country hated being inside all day long and soon found work on a farm where he met his future wife, Elizabeth "Bessie" Maguire. His brother, Tom, came to America, but after eight years got homesick and returned to Ireland.
Over the years, as with so many immigrants Jim lost contact with his family in Ireland. His children and grandchildren knew from stories told that there might still be family there. All of his brothers and sisters had stayed in Ireland and had families except for Bridget, Elizabeth, Lucy and Tom who never married. Joseph, Mary, Margaret and Alice all married and had families but the only families left today in Ireland with descendents are Joseph's and Margaret's. Alice's and Mary's families are all gone.
Joseph's children are Larry; Tom, who lives in Clara; Colm, who owns the family farm; Lucy and Mary. Margaret's son is Jim Brien.
Margaret (Cunninghasm)Brien and Joseph Cunningham are sister and brother to Jim Cunningham, who came to the U.S., and are the family members who are left with their descendents in Ireland that the Wood sisters got to meet while on their trip.
After getting married, Jim Cunningham and his wife Bessie made their home around Danbury and for many years in Anthon. Jim was the town cop in Anthon and worked at the gas station where the fire station sets today. Jim died in 1957. He and Bessie are both buried at Danbury. They raised eight children.
Marcella their oldest, married Harry Wood and the couple made their home here at Anthon. It was Marcella's daughters (along with two granddaughters and one son-in-law) who had planned the trip to Ireland. Other children of Jim and Bessie (Maguire) Cunningham were sons Tom and Frank, both of whom raised their families at Anthon. Joe, who raised his family at Correctionville, and Maurice, who raised his family in New Jersey. Daughters Gilda and Anna made their homes in Sioux City and Catherine resided in California.
While in Ireland the Wood sisters were shown the family farm, near Clara, Ireland and the cemetery where their Great Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins are buried at the Durrow Parish, Tullamore, Ireland. They drove 996 miles exactly while there. They also toured the Ring of Kerry, Dublin, Kilkenny area, castles, Waterford Crystal factory, kissed the Blarney stone, and made the acquaintance of an Anthon web page visitor from Limerick; Junior Franklin and his family.
A once in a lifetime trip, and not one of them would trade a minute of their travels. They went "home" to Ireland, and came back home to the U.S. richer (for finding family and new friends in a land that held so much history for them) than that of their grandfather, when he first stepped foot in America over 100 years ago.
Thanks for sharing your exciting travels with our Anthon Web Page family Ruth. We hope that your families can continue to keep in touch over the miles!11/09/02
Who would have guessed that an entry to our Anthon Web pages Guest book would have forged a friendship for families that spanned an ocean! Well, it happened! and here is the story.
As a footnote to our guest book entries, Mary Lorraine McHugh from Moville, Ireland (also an Anthon web page visitor this past year interested in Moville, Iowa and McDermott's from the area) is hoping to visit the Moville, Iowa area in March of next year!
I am so glad our web pages have been able to bring together other people from around the Anthon area with those "over the water" too. VSB~ A very small world indeed!
Hello
My name is Mary Lorraine Mchugh, I am a community artist living in Moville
Donegal Ireland. It is a long shot really e mailing your web site. A man
called John McDermot lived in Moville, in the 1870's and named Moville Iowa
after his home here in Ireland.
Mary wrote the following article for us at the Anthon Web Pages in hopes that someone interested in the Moville Iowa history with a Mr. McDermott from Moville Ireland or someone from the McDermott family who may be interested in assisting with this project.
The town of Moville in Donegal Ireland is on the Inishowen Peninsula. It is surrounded by Lough Swilly , (The Lake of Shadows), and The Lough of Foyle. At the top of the peninsula is the most northerly point of Ireland,
Malin Head. The area is steeped in history, of myth of folklore of truth.
The most common names in the area, are Doherty part of the O'Donnell clan, McDermott, Mclaughlin, McCartney, Harkin, Gillan, Gillespie. There are so
many Dohertys, that they go by nicknames, so do the Mclaughlins.
The Journey
I needs help in my quest to honour all who left the land of Ireland, in their quest for a better life, as John McDermott did when he eventually settled in the place he called Moville, which was that the end of
his own Journey.
If Mary Lorraine is to succeed at her latest artistic endeavor, she will need to have Moville residents or "McDermott family" get in touch with her and let her know what they would like to help her with. Mary will need places to stay (show her the hospitality Iowa is noted for); volunteers who would be able to set with Mary and tell her the history of Moville, Iowa - drive her around town, show her old photographs and any other possible ways of helping would be greatly appreciated as well I am sure!
Mary Lorraine can be reached via e-mail through me here:
Back in August of 2002, Junior Franklin left this entry to our guest book:
I think this is the best site i have ever visited, so much so I will now be considering visiting your lovely town on my next visit to the u.s.a - well done.
junior franklin
After reading Junior's entry I responded to his e-mail and thanked him for his kind words and asked him how he had come across our web site. - He couldn't remember!
He did ask however if he were to come, did we have hotels, or motels available...(Patron Sponsors?) Meanwhile, I found out that our own city clerk; Ruth Groth was planning a trip to Ireland with her sisters to meet her Mother's first cousins that were still in Ireland. To make a long story short, I contacted Junior, and copied Ruth on the e-mail. Though hesitant at first, Ruth did E-mail Junior, he E-mailed back and it was up to Ruth then to contact him when they got to Limerick (He gave her his cell phone number). It took more nudging from her sisters; which consisted of Ruth's sister Mary Nissen of Anaheim California, sister Marlene Petersen of Tilden, Nebraska, and Marlene's daughter Bev from Torrance, California but Ruth finally called him and he eagerly picked the group of women up after supper and gave them the grand tour of Limerick. Franklin showed them where Frank McCourt the American author of Angela's Ashes grew up (since Ruth's sister Mary is a huge fan and Junior's father attended school with Frank's brother.) He took them down the main street of Limerick; which by the way is called O'Connell Street, and then past his leather goods and shoe repair shop and his wife's Deli. He then took the group of American's home to meet his wife and daughter. It was his night to cook, so Ruth said he fixed them a fresh apple pie and coffee and tea. The group enjoyed their visit and their tour of the area and meeting a new found friend who will no doubt find his way to the U.S. again (they have traveled here three times already this year.)Ruth's sister Mary has invited them to visit her in California, which no doubt they will do, and we hope that Junior and his wife Jacquie and daughter will also make it to Anthon too now to visit Ruth and her family and enjoy our little bit of heaven here. Small world we have - thanks to the Internet and our Patron sponsors to the Anthon Web pages!
As of 10-20-02 the following came as part of an E-mail to me (Vickie Buettner; webmaster) from Mary Lorraine McHugh, Moville, Ireland: "Vickie: I have been travelling
around Donegal doing storytelling for young children in the libraries.A couple of weeks ago I cannot remember if I told you. Two women read the article in the paper (Probably the Moville {IA} Record Newspaper as I had suggested to Mary she contact the papers to do an article on her and a possible trip to Moville, Iowa) and they came to Moville, (Ireland) to visit. They had been raised in Moville Iowa, but are now living in another state. They had planned their Irish holiday but came to see Moville anyway. They told me I really needed to drive when visiting Iowa, but that does not matter to me. We can drive on not a full licence here, and it would be next year late, before I had my full licence.
They were very friendly and loved the landscape here.
The dark nights are drawing in now, and it does get bleak here. Well it is just a short note to keep in touch. The Northern Ireland assembly has broken down, and I do hope that no violence ensues over the border, as it does
effect our lives here, being so close...Well Vickie
Greetings from over the water......Mary Lorraine.
I received this initial e-mail from Mary Lorraine Mchugh from Moville, Donnegal, Ireland. Can you help or do you know someone who is from Moville who would be interested in helping her?
The parish priest here has a picture of the Catholic Church in Moville,Iowa so at some stage there must have been links.
As an artist I would like to paint on canvas, and photograph Moville Iowa,
as well as Moville here in Donegal. I have been the resident artist at
Ruskin College Oxford. I would like to have an exhibition called The
Journey. I have been in touch with the Dept of Cultural Affairs, in Iowa, who
are very enthused by the project. I need people of Moville Iowa to sort
of be enthused, or it will not happen .Could your website maybe assist by
getting in touch with the community of Moville Iowa for me. Maybe there are
even relatives of the McDermots who named the town.
Kindest Regards
Mary Lorraine Mchugh.
If you know of family, or know of someone from Moville, Iowa who may be able or interested in helping or assisting in any manner, let them know about this article and how they can contact Ms. Mchugh. Thank you all so much!

The town of Moville is 15 miles away from the border with Northern Ireland. The city of Derry is where the troubles were very prolific in the 1970's. It is the
nearest place of work, for the community of Moville. So the community knows the horrors of the troubles , but is a peaceful fishing town.
In the town of Moville there are three churches, Catholic, the Church of Ireland, and the Presbyrterian. It is a mixed community , and a very tight knit community.
The flight of the earls took place in the 1600s and the earls fled to Spain, away from the English.
The chief landowner in the turn of the century was the Montgomery's who were Anglo irish, as most landlords were. The most famous Montgomery was Brigadier Montgomery of the second world war fame.
The buildings in the town do display some anglo influence, but just outside is still the irish thatched crofts. There have been many fishing tragedies here in
Inishowen, and the sea gives, and it also takes. There was a spanish ship, not too long ago found with all its treausure on board, it was called the Mary Rose.
In the town we have living here a few famous people, John Hume the nobel peace prize winner has a summer place here. Also Brian Friel the novelist who has had his books made into plays and a film - The film being "Dancing at
Lughnasa" starring Meryl Streep. The film "Braveheart" was ronically filmed in Donegal. Which brings me to the part of history which involves Iowa.
There have been long links with the U.S.A . Many of the firefighters in the September 11 atrocity - their families lived here in Inishowen. We are still deeply effected by this as a community.
The ships in the late 1800's left the port of Derry, and on those ships were the Irish immigrants. One such
man was John McDermott, who eventually settled in the mid west. He named the place where he eventually settled Moville in Iowa. The links are there and need to be reunited. I am an artist living in Moville, Ireland by the name of Mary Lorraine Mchugh, and I would like to connect with the two towns via the medium of art. I am at the moment starting to undertake drawing, photographing, and
painting on canvas the town of Moville in Ireland. I would like to stay in Iowa for a few months and do the same in Moville Iowa.
Without the input of the community of Moville Iowa, I will be unable to get funding. I have excellent credentials. I have had many exhibitions in Europe, and was the resident artist of Ruskin College Oxford. My last major exhibition was "The Potato Pickers" - 10 famine paintings, now in a community centre in Derry,
along with my poetry. I would like to call the eventual exhibition of the two towns images, "The Journey", here is a small piece of the poem called "The Journey" that I have written for the exhibition.
In treacherous oceans
They clung to belongings
They watched as ireland
Was left in the mist
Only to be seen again
In slumber
Where was the place?
to rest their heads
From the hunger
The journey

Congratulations ELEANORE on being named Wallace Farmer's Magazine's 2001 IOWA MASTER FARM HOMEMAKER! Each year since 1928, the magazine chooses four women throughout Iowa to receive this award. Eleanore, as many of you know has been a teacher in the River Valley School Distrist for many years, and since "retiring?" has been substitute teaching at Anthon-Oto for many years. She has also been very active for many many years with the 'ANTHON ADVANCER'S 4-H CLUB' besides being active at the Methodist Church here in Anthon, and involved with the Woodbury County Fair yearly as well. Eleanore is the wife of Robert Lewis and the couple make their home on a farm southwest of Correctionville. They have three grown children; Robert who graduated from Anthon-Oto in 1971, Christi who graduated from Anthon-Oto in 1974, and Tracy who graduated from A-O in 1979. Bob and Eleanore celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in August 2001. Eleanore received her award on her 70th birthday; Sept. 7, 2001. Our VERY best to you Eleanore!
After 23 years of volunteer fire and ambulance service, most of which was spent as chief of the rescue squad Kevin Kollbaum is retiring. During his tenure the squad developed into one of the best volunteer squads in the state in all aspects. He has committed more of his time and energy to this task than most people will ever know. To top it off, he did it while farming a couple thousand acres, working in the hospital and attending Morningside College full time.
This is not what most would call retirement. It's more like what, as Tony Collins stated; "I would call from the pan to the fire."
Kevin will be spending 12 to 16 hours a day for the next couple years pursuing a Physician's Assistant career.
He has taken care of this community above and beyond the call of duty and it is time for us ALL to say THANKS KEV.
Brittany has returned home from her trip. HOPE IT WENT WELL BRITTANY!
