ELIZABETH "BETTY" GOTHIER 87, of Anthon passed away on Wednesday, December 19, 2007, at the Embassy Rehab and Care Center in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa. Services: Saturday December 22, 2007 at the United Methodist Church in Anthon, with the Rev. Vickie Steffes officiating. Burial: in Oak Hill Cemetery, Anthon. Elizabeth Lucille Gothier was born August 8, 1920, in Hawarden, Iowa, the daughter of John C. and Gertrude (Angle) Dawson. She grew up on a farm and went to country school in Union County. She graduated from high school in Hawarden and attended Wayne State College. In 1938, she received her teacher's certificate and taught lower elementary school in Hinton, Iowa, for two years and then in Correctionville, Iowa, for one year. While in college, she met Donald Gothier of Anthon. On Sept. 5, 1943, they were united in marriage in Hawarden. After her husband completed his military duties, the couple returned to Anthon, where they owned and operated the Gothier Mink Ranch that included mink, cattle and farming. Don died June 8, 1998. She was a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star and attended United Methodist Church, where she was active in WSCS. She also was a member of the Women's Club and was on the library board for many years. Betty was an accomplished artist. Her water color paintings were beautiful. She won several awards over the years for her paintings. Survivors include a daughter, Christine Jansen of Sioux City and her family, grandson, Aric Petersen and his wife, Jodi of San Diego, Calif., granddaughter, Heather and her husband, Rick Schager of Sioux City and great-grandchildren, Stephen and Rebecca Schager, grandson, Christopher Hansen of Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Mary and Terry Lane of Le Mars, Iowa, and their family, grandson, Clifford McMurray and his wife, Jennifer of Kansas City, Mo., and grandson, Patrick Lane of Iowa City, Iowa; daughter and her husband, Patricia and Matthew Rippy of Denver, Colo. and their family, grandson, Jonathan Petersen of Ames, Iowa, granddaughter, Jenny and her husband, Matthew Montange of Des Moines, great-grandson, Mason Montange, and granddaughter, Jillian Petersen of Anthon; and a brother-in-law, Rollie Camp of Madison, Wis. Along with her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Patricia Camp.
MAE MAURENE SARGENT 90, of Anthon passed away on Tuesday, November 6, 2007, at the Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center in Correctionville, Iowa, where she spent the last four days of her life being cared for by her family and the compassionate staffs of both the center and Hospice of Siouxland. A celebration of her life was held at the United Methodist Church in Anthon, with the Rev. Vickie Steffes officiating. Burial was in Fairfield Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon. Mae was born on March 5, 1917, rural Anthon, the daughter of Louie and Grace (Jones) Fey. She attended country schools and the Anthon Public School. She graduated from Correctionville Public School, where she took Normal Training and received her teaching certificate. She taught school in Kedron, Rutland, Grant and Miller Townships. On September 7, 1940, she married Francis Eugene Lewis. The couple had one daughter, Constance Maurene. On April 19, 1952, she married George Sargent. After their marriage, they lived on the family farm at Lucky Valley, west of Anthon. Four daughters, Kathy, Karyl, Kristin and Keri, were born while they lived on the farm. In 1959, the family moved into Anthon, where the couple have resided since. Family was a priority in her life. Some of the happiest times she had were those that she spent with family. She loved to sing and her children and grandchildren spent many hours in the rocking chair with her singing songs. She devoted her life to the loving care of her family and home. Her faith was an important part of her life also. She was a member of the Anthon United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was a member of United Methodist Women. After their children were grown and gone from home, the couple took dancing lessons and traveled to many dances. For 50 years, she enjoyed playing the role of Mrs. Santa Claus. She enjoyed the simple pleasures of life and appreciated the beauty of every day. She will be lovingly remembered for her sense of humor and her witticism. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, George; five daughters, Connie Ashley, Kathy and her husband, John Hodgdon, Karyl Lyon, Kristin and her husband, Tom Noreen and Keri and her husband, Gary Kranz; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Marguerite Kobs; three brothers, Frank, Arnold and Paul Fey; a son-in-law, Edward Ashley; and a great-grandchild.
PAUL CLAUSEN 44 of Anthon passed away on Monday, October 29, 2007. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, November 3, 2007 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Anthon. Burial: Mount St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery at Anthon. Visitation will be Friday after 4:00 PM, with a vigil wake service at 7:00 PM at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon.
DIANE FUNDERMANN 53, of Anthon, passed away on Friday, October 26, 2007, at her home, after a 10 month battle with cancer.
Services Tuesday, October 30, 2007 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon. Burial: Mount St. Joseph Cemetery, Anthon.
Diane Kay Fundermann was born October 31, 1953, at Anthon, Iowa, to Marvin "Pork" and Evelyn (White) Umbach. Diane attended school at Anthon graduating in 1971. On November 10, 1972 she married Wayne Fundermann and the couple made their home at Anthon.
Diane drove school bus for the Anthon-Oto Community School for many years and was currently employed at Terragro at Anthon.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon and a past member of the Anthon Volunteer Fire Department.
She was preceded in death by her father.
Survivors include her husband, Wayne; two sons, Scott and his wife, Tammy and their children Emalee and Ely Fundermann of Anthon, and Robert and his wife, Angie, and their children Sydney and Taylor Fundermann of Anthon, and one daughter Nicole and her husband, Bill Todd and children Gabby, Beau and Sunshine of Washta; her mother, Evelyn Umbach of Anthon; two brothers, Thomas of Anthon and Edward of Homeland, Calif.; five sisters, Janice Adkins of Oto, Iowa, Carla Handke of Anthon, Marilyn Horton of Sioux City, Sheila Lansink of Anthon and Becky Umbach, also of Anthon. Also surviving are many nieces,nephews, and cousins as well as a community of friends; all of whom will miss her greatly.
HERTHA BUROW 89, of Mapleton, formerly of Anthon and rural Battle Creek, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2007, at a Sioux City hospital with her children by her side, following a severe stroke. Services were held on Friday, October 19, 2007 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Midway, rural Battle Creek, Iowa. Burial: St. Paul Cemetery, Midway. Hertha Ruth, the first daughter of eleven children was born on December 16, 1917 to Rudolf and Rebecca (Knecht) Sailer near Zap, North Dakota. After graduating from high school she continued her education and received her teaching certification from Dickinson College. Hertha's first teaching position brought her to a rural school located on the corner of the Frank Burow farm. Shortly after her arrival in the summer of 1941 a neighbor suggested to Albert Burow that he meet the new schoolmarm. Overshadowed by the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the uncertainty of World War II, Albert and Hertha were married on December 21, 1941 after a three month courtship. They spent their first weeks of marriage traveling through a blizzard to meet the relatives. Hertha soon retired from teaching and became a faithful farmer's wife and loving mother to the couples two children; Betty Jean and Gaylen Albert. The couple were active members of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Midway, rural Battle Creek, Iowa. Hertha's hobbies and interests included sewing, quilting, gardening, baking, reading the Bible and singing Christian hymns. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings Irene, Erwin, Reynold and Helen Sailer, and her husband Albert of 65 years. She is survived and lovingly remembered by her daughter Betty and husband Bill Ashley of Mapleton, Iowa and her son, Pastor Gayen Burow and his wife Linda of Bonner Springs, Kansas; siblings, Alfred and Pat Sailer of Andover, Minnesota, Ardella Herrmann of Bealah, North Dakota, Ruby Tesky of Hazen, North Dakota, Richard Sailer of Sioux City, Iowa, Elmer and Linda Sailer of Bealah, North Dakota, and Eugene and Eldora Sailer of Zap, North Dakota. Hertha was a loving Grandmother to Steven Ashley of Hinton, Iowa, Shauna (Ashley) and husband Tim Hugen of Mt. Airy, Maryland, Eliza Christian of Nashua, New Hampshire, Emilee Burow of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Evan Burow of Bonner Springs, Kansas. Hertha also has two great-grandchildren; Jessica and Bryan Hugen of Maryland. Her kind spirit, strong faith, devotional life and daily prayer will remain a loving memory to her family and friends.
WILLIAM EMERY former Anthon Alumni from Pecatonica, Illinois died Wednesday October 10, 2007, in his home after an extended illness. Born April 23, 1933, in Scranton, Iowa, to Harold and Alice Emery. Bill attended 5th grade through high school, graduating with the class of 1951 at Anthon Community School. He was on the Anthon baseball team; of which were state champs his senior year. Bill's family later relocated in the Humboldt, Ia area. Bill was a truck driver for many years, and most recently before retirement, he was operations manager for Universal Relocation North American Van Lines of Rockford. Those who knew Bill will share a smile when they recall his quick wit and way with words. He is survived by his dearest friend and companion of 17 years, Patricia Allen ; stepson Mike(Liz) Ellis and their daughter Amber of Machesney Park; brother, Earl (Glenda) Emery of Springfield, Ohio; sisters, Sandra MacDonald of Chandler, Ariz and Linda Buttler of Bishop, Calif. A sincere thank you to Joann, Heather, Dan and the wonderful caregivers of Hospice Care of America, Dr. Kathryn Anderson and dear friends, Donna Cowell and Ron and Jean Olson for your loving care and support. Per Bill's wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial gathering was held Saturday, October 13, 2007 in First Congregational Church of Pecatonica, Illinois. A memorial has been established.
ELLEN M. CAVANAUGH 78, of Sioux City, and a former Anthon resident passed away on Sunday, September 9, 2007. Services: Wednesday September 12, 2007 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Sioux City, Iowa, with the Rev. Merlin Schrad officiating. Burial: Holy Cross Cemetery, Anamosa, Iowa. Ellen Marie was born on June 2, 1929, at Anamosa, Iowa to Francis Leo and Celestena (O'Brien) Maudsley. She attended Anamosa Public Schools through her sophomore year in high school and graduated from St. Angela's Academy in Carroll, Iowa in 1947. She attended St. Joseph School of Nursing in Omaha, Nebraska. In 1950, she married Leonard Cavanaugh and in 1952 they moved to Anthon, Iowa. She was a homemaker and mother of eight children. She also assisted her husband in his veterinary, livestock feed and elevator businesses. In 1975, Ellen moved to Sioux City and in 1977 she received her registered nurse designation from Western Iowa Tech Community College. She worked for many years as a registered nurse at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center, in Sioux City, Iowa. She was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon and Catholic Daughters of America while living in Anthon. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Sioux City. Survivors include one son Bill and his wife Susie Cavanaugh of Clear Lake, Iowa; six daughters, Mary Cavanaugh of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Julie and her husband Jere Jackson of Rapid City, South Dakota, Colleen and husband Fred Bortscheller of Le Mars, Iowa, Kerry and husband Stan Huffman of Correctionville, Iowa, Beth and husband, Dr. Peter Jansen of Orange Park, Florida, and Molly and her husband Bob Wickert of Omaha, Nebraska; two sisters and their husbands, Kathryn and Earl Beisell of Anamosa, Iowa, and Jane and Dale Ortner of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; a brother, Tom Maudsley of Des Moines, Iowa; 19 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Ellen was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Daniel Cavanaugh; a grandson, Jacob Huffman; and a sister, Mary Frances Brady.
EMILY L. DYER 92, of Anthon passed away on Sunday, September 9, 2007, at a Sioux City hospital. Services: Wednesday September 12, 2007 at the Oto United Church of Christ in Oto, Iowa. Rev. Karen Handke officiated and assisted by the Rev. Andrew Carlson. Burial: Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City. Emily Laura Dyer was born on October 5, 1914, at Kiron, Iowa. Her family moved to Correctionville, Iowa where Emily graduated from High School. She then taught in country school. On October 14, 1945, she married Frank Dyer at Elk Point, S.D. The couple lived in Leeds, Iowa, then Bronson, Iowa, and later moved to Oto, Iowa where they lived until they retired and moved to Anthon in 1984. Frank passed away on May 4, 2003. Survivors include a son and his wife, Keith and Edna Dyer of Anthon; two daughters, Eleen Ashley of Anthon and Marilyn and her husband, George Ashley of Cushing, Iowa; two grandchildren and their spouses, Rob and Traci Ashley of Moville, Iowa, and Marla and Aaron Kollbaum of Anthon; four great-grandchildren, Ashley and Logan Kollbaum and Blake and Wyatt Ashley; and a brother and his wife, William and Teresa Sachau of Allen, Neb. Along with her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; and four brothers.
DONALD W. JONES, 65, of Sioux City, and formerly of Anthon passed away Sunday, August 19, 2007, at his residence in Sioux City, Iowa. Services: Friday August 24, 2007 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Anthon, Iowa, with the Rev. Terry Roder officiating. Burial: Mount St. Joseph Cemetery at Anthon. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Friday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon. Donald Winyard "Don" Jones was born April 26, 1942, in Garden City, Kan., to Merl R. and Marie E. (Castleman) Jones. In 1946, the family moved to Anthon, where he attended school and graduated from Anthon-Oto High School in 1961. He began working at Mercy Medical Center - Sioux City in 1968 and retired in 2004. He was currently employed as a independent contracted carrier for the Sioux City Journal. He was actively involved in his church and the Knights of Columbus. He greatly enjoyed attending high school sport activities in the Sioux City area, watching the Iowa Hawkeyes and having coffee with his friends. He was a loving brother, son and uncle and he valued the time he could visit with his family. Left to treasure his memory are his brothers, Lawrence L. (Catherine) Jones of Iowa City, Iowa, and Robert N. (Suzanne) Jones of Twin Falls, Idaho; the nephews and niece he loved so much, Christopher Jones of Champaign, Ill., Katherine Jones of Ames, Iowa, Neal, Caleb and Chad (Rochelle) Jones of Twin Falls, Idaho, and Jeremy (Emalie) Jones of Cleveland, Tenn.; and four grandnieces. GENEVIEVE C. PIERCE 91, formerly of Oto passed away on Sunday, August 19, 2007, at a Sioux City hospital. She had been a resident of Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton, Iowa, since suffering a stroke in 1996. Memorial services: Thursday August 23, at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton, Iowa. Burial: West Fork Cemetery, at Climbing Hill, Iowa. Genevieve Charlotte Pierce was born December 13, 1915, to William H. and Nellie Bell (Sierk) Kirkpatrick. She was raised in the Oto and Climbing Hill area and graduated from Climbing Hill in 1933. Following graduation, she lived and worked in Sioux City. On Dec. 16, 1937, she married J. Earl Pierce in Elk Point, S.D. Earl and Genevieve owned and operated a trucking business in Oto for over 52 years. After retiring, the couple kept active in senior citizen activities and loved to go to dances. Earl passed away on February 13, 2003. Genevieve was a member of Oto United Church of Christ and was a past member of the Oto Mites Society and Rebecca Lodge. She also served on the local election board for many years. However, her real passion was cooking, particularly making breads, rolls and desserts. She is survived by her son, Larry of Sioux City; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Wanda and Clifton Weber of Cushing, Iowa; three nieces, Beverly McClure of Wisner, Neb., Bette Dean of West Chester, Ohio, and Judy Roose of Pella, Iowa; a nephew, Harlan Weber of Omaha; numerous cousins; and many good friends. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and two brothers, Leonard and Floyd Kirkpatrick.
KAREN ANN LINDER, 19, of Sioux City passed away Saturday, August 11, 2007, following an automobile accident. Memorial services: Tuesday August 21, 2007 at Sunnybrook Community Church. Online condolences may be sent to www.meyerbroschapels.com. Karen was born January 1, 1988, in Sioux City, to Kevin and Lori Linder. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Sioux City. Karen was a 2006 valedictorian at North High School. She loved music; played the piano, clarinet and saxophone and played in the high school jazz band. Karen was also involved with the madrigals and choreographed and danced in musicals. She was active in Siouxland Movement Arts, traveling to Disney World, Kansas City, New York City, Chicago and London, England. A dance major, she was attending Hope College as a Presidential Scholarship recipient and had received the Distinguished Artist award in dance. She died with the love of her life, Sam Meengs. Karen is survived by her parents, Kevin and Lori Linder of Sioux City former Anthon-Oto residents and faculty at Anthon-Oto Community School; a sister, Katie Linder of Sioux City; grandparents, Donna and Gary Linder of Onawa, Iowa and Leo and Frances Harris; aunts and uncles, Mary Kay and David Duquette, Connie and Ron Smith and Cindy and Tim McCall; cousins, Emily and Andrew Duquette, Lisa, Renee and Anna Smith and Jill, Maggie and Christa McCall and Emily Linder. ROGER LINN 73, of Correctionville, a former Anthon-Oto High School teacher and longtime ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) survivor, passed away from complications from prostate cancer Saturday, August 11, 2007, at a Sioux City hospital. Services: Wednesday August 14, 2007 with the Revs. Terry Fetterman and Sheryl K. Ashley officiating. Burial: in Good Hope Cemetery. Roger was born December 21, 1933, to Dwight and Lelia Linn, on the family farm near Correctionville. He graduated from Pierson (Iowa) High School in 1952. While attending Iowa State College, he met his future wife, Roberta "Bobbi" Badger. They were married Oct. 6, 1956. He taught high school science in Pleasantville and Lake Park, Iowa, before returning to farm near his parents. He taught full-time in Anthon, Iowa, for several years and also substituted in other area schools. He was a rock hound. He read about and studied geographical formations around the country and took his family on many camping trips "out west", where they found petrified wood and other rough gemstones. He especially loved the Lake Superior region and eventually purchased a small cabin in Finland, Minn., so he always had a place to stay while rock hunting during the summer. In the fall, farm life got busier with the harvest, but the family always found a weekend to press homemade apple cider and preserve the garden produce he planted in the spring. Many Siouxland families have purchased Christmas trees at Linn Nursery planted by him and his children. He also employed high school students to help dig and move evergreen trees to local windbreaks and home landscapes. He had been a well known name in Republican politics for many years. He chaired the Woodbury County Republican Party from 1986 to 1996. He served on the Iowa State Republican Central Committee from 1986 to 1992. He also chaired the platform committee for several years at district conventions. He was a constant adviser to those running for offices at the state and national level. He and his family spent more than 10 years researching and writing "The Clan Linn in the Twentieth Century", a family history book detailing the 1788 immigration of Hugh Linn from County Down, Ireland, to Pennsylvania. The book, published in 1991, chronicles the westward movement of the Linn descendents and includes anecdotes from many branches of the family tree. Most importantly, Grandpa Roger doted on his grandchildren. They worked together on projects from 4-H to bin building. He taught the next generation things they couldn't learn in school. Grandpa always expected hard work and dedication. Survivors include his wife, Bobbi; his sons, David, Phred and his wife, Jayne and Ron, all of Correctionville; a daughter and her husband, Jan and Dr. Tim Swinton of Marshalltown, Iowa; grandchildren, Anna, Sara, Ben, Zoe and Isaac Linn and Nathan and his wife, Sarah, Sam, Aaron and Hannah Swinton; an honorary son, Garry Fowler and his wife, JoAnn and their daughter, Katie of Olathe, Kan.; two brothers and their wives, Joe and Wanda and Roy and Linda, all of Correctionville; four nieces; a nephew; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dwight and Lelia Linn of Correctionville. EMBER ILO ANKRUM 58, of North Sioux City and formerly of Oto was called home by the Lord on Friday, August 3, 2007, at his residence surrounded by his family. Services: Tuesday August 7, 2007 at United Church of Christ in Rodney, Iowa, with Pastor Karen Handke officiating. Burial: in Grant Township Cemetery, with military rites conducted. Willman Funeral Chapel in Rodney was in charge of arrangements. Ember was born September 19, 1948, in Sioux City, the son of Bill and Rosemary (Seemann) Ankrum. He grew up in the Oto/Rodney area, attending grade school in Oto. He later graduated from trade school in Hawarden, Iowa. He attended the CMI Gomaco School in Oklahoma for heavy equipment and also the Gomaco School in Ida Grove, Iowa. He was stationed in Germany with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the VFW for 17 years. Ember was married to Pauline Murfield. Two children, Tracy and Amy, were born to this union. He later married Gail Krumvieda. He was employed at Floyd Valley Packing for 15 years and worked for Irving F. Jensen Construction for 20 years, retiring in 2006 due to his health. Ember enjoyed playing cribbage in numerous tournaments throughout the city. He also enjoyed hunting, playing bingo and loved to travel and go camping. He was noted for his great sense of humor and playing jokes on his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Survivors include his wife, Gail of North Sioux City; a son, Tracy and his wife, Nan of Sioux City; a daughter, Amy Ankrum of Sioux City; three stepdaughters, Stacey and Clint Becker of Des Moines, Holly Krumvieda and Renee Krumvieda, both of North Sioux City; a stepson, Troy Krumvieda of Yankton, S.D.; a grandson, Zachary Ankrum; and stepgrandchildren, Drew and Evan Becker, Nicholas Clark Jr., Amanda and Jacob Brown and Nick and Danielle Cain; four brothers, Art and Sue Ankrum of Franklin, Tenn., Wilbur and Jane Ankrum of Washta, Iowa, LeRoy and Debra Ankrum of Hillsborough, N.C. and Larry and Rose Ankrum of Colorado Springs, Colo.; four sisters, Stella and Phil Hayworth of Anthon, Iowa, Norma and Bill Brassel of Anthon, Jessie and David Holcomb of Correctionville, Iowa and Judy Ankrum of Holstein, Iowa; and very close friend, Ray Svenson. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a granddaughter, Kama Marie Ankrum. Pallbearers will be his nephews, Shane, Jason and Brandon Ankrum, Chad, Christopher and Curtis Hayworth.
JOHN JAMES CARR known as "Jim" to his family, "J.J." to his friends, and "Mountain Man" to his grandchildren and Air Traffic Control brothers, passed away at his home in Anthon, Iowa on Sunday, July 29, 2007. Born October 4, 1938, Jim was the first of seven children born to Cy and Dorothy Carr. He attended St. Joseph's Catholic School in Anthon and Heelan Catholic High School in Sioux City.
He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1956 and served honorably for 21 years attaining the rank of MSgt. During his years of service he was stationed in California, Okinawa, Japan, North Carolina, Vietnam, Missouri, Iowa, and Arizona. Upon retiring from the military, Jim went to work in Civil Service as an Air Traffic Controller in Yuma, Arizona where he resided for more than 30 years. While in Yuma, Jim was active in the VFW, Elks, and American Legion. He was also Grand Pu-Bah of the Gila River Chapter of the Arizona Mountain Men Society.
Jim was married to Nyla Erickson of Sioux City in 1958 until her death in 1982. He then married Anne Harrington of Yuma, Arizona in 1985.
Jim is survived by his wife, Anne, his 6 children and their spouses; Jeff of Missouri, Jim (Angela) of Yuma, Arizona, Craig of Ocheyeden, Iowa, Brad (Lynda) Carr of Sioux City, Iowa, Kelly (Jess) Cook of Twentynine Palms, California, and Destry Carr of Yuma, Arizona, two step children; Les (Audra) Evans of Yuma, Arizona, and DeDe (Norm) Miller-Friend of Indiana,15 grandchildren, his siblings and their spouses; Jerry (Petie), Jack, Joe (Mary) and Jay (Beth) Carr, Judy (Bill) Lourens and Jenny (Paul) Hensel.
His parents, Cy and Dorothy Carr, his first wife, Nyla Erickson Carr, and a granddaughter, Amanda Cook, precede him in death.
Jim will be remembered as the greatest storyteller of all time, for his quick wit and humor, his service to his country, his love of fishing, and his love for his family. Meyers Funeral Home in Sioux City is handling funeral arrangements with a private cremation to follow.

CARROLL C. COOPER 86, of Indian Hills Care Center, formerly of Moville, passed away on Friday, July 20, 2007, at the care center.
Services were held on Tuesday, July 24, 2007 at Rock Branch United Methodist Church in Rock Branch, Iowa, with the Rev. Vickie Steffes officiating. Burial: in Fairfield Cemetery at Rock Branch.
Carroll was born on September 15, 1920, at Moville, the son of Daniel and Mary (Sadler) Cooper. He was raised in the Anthon and Moville areas. He married Mona Adams on February 11, 1943, in Omaha, Nebraska. Mona passed away on Dec. 30, 1993, in Sioux City. The couple farmed in the Anthon area until moving to a farm near Moville in 1972. Carroll farmed most of his life and later became a machinist at Concrete Pipe Machinery in Sioux City, retiring from there in 1982. He enjoyed fishing and being outdoors.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Jaacks of Moville, Iowa and Jan (Bill) Snyder of Fairfield, Ohio; one granddaughter, Jaci (Rick) Dominowski; three grandsons, Jeff (Kelli) Jaacks, Billy Jr. (Amy) Snyder and Sean (Kelly) Snyder; four great-grandchildren, Tyler and Ryan Jaacks and Emma and Logan Snyder; two great-stepgrandchildren, Jacob and Abby; a sister, Alice (Ray) Winneke of Sioux City; and a brother, Marvin (Helen) Cooper of Sun City, California.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and a brother, Vernon Cooper.
FERN CHARITY SIMMON WILLMAN 102, longtime Rodney and Oto, Iowa, resident, and former Anthon-Oto teacher passed away Wednesday, July 18, 2007, at Elmwood Care Center in Onawa, Iowa. Services: Saturday July 21, 2007 at the Rodney United Church of Christ in Rodney, Iowa, with Pastor Karen Handke officiating. Burial: in Little Sioux Township Cemetery at Smithland, Iowa. Arrangements were under the direction of Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa.
Fern Charity was born on June 8, 1905, rural Woodbury County, near Oto, Iowa, to Henry Peter and Ida Grace (Cruzan) Simmon. She was raised in Grant Township and attended Peiro Bethel Church at Peiro, southwest of Anthon, Iowa. Bethel Church today is part of the Woodbury County Fair exhibits and is still used during the fair with church services. As a young girl growing up Fern participated in 4-H and was distinguished as a member of the Iowa State Championshhip Team in 1920. She graduated from Oto High School in 1924 and attended Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa.
Fern was a career educator, and loved teaching. She taught in several Woodbury County rural schools; in Grant Township schools (1925-1932, 1934-1937, 1940-1950), Miller Township schools (1933-1935), at Hickory Grove Independent Schools (1938-1940), Oto Independent Schools (1950-1960), and at Anthon-Oto Community School from 1960-1971.
On November 25, 1955 Fern was united in marriage to Delmer John Willman, rural Anthon, Iowa. Fern lived at Oto and Rodney as an adult and attended the United Church of Christ in both communities. She was a member of the Queen Esther Chapter 222 of the O.E.S. in Onawa, Iowa, and the Leslie F. Seaton American Legion Auxiliary Post 666 at Smithland, Iowa. She was a life member of the Iowa State Education Association. She enjoyed painting, gardening, reading and playing the organ.
Fern moved to Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, Iowa in 1997, where she was honored as an inductee to the State of Iowa's Century Club in 2005. She moved to the Elmwood Care Center in Onawa in September of 2006.
She is survived by a niece, Louise Simmon Wehde of Omaha, Nebraska; two nephews, Larry Simmon of Springfield, Missouri and Robert Simmon of Green Valley, Arizona; six great nieces and nephews and their families. Through marriage, she had three grandchildren, Scott Willman of Granville, Iowa, Derrick Willman of Chicago, Illinois and Robin Willman Enerson of Gruver, Iowa; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a stepson, Waldron Willman; two sisters, Ruth Simmon and Faith Simmon; a brother, Henry L. Simmon; and a sister-in-law Lucille Coon.
ARDELL RAY DICUS 73, of Sioux City and formerly of Anthon, passed away on Saturday, June 30, 2007, at a local nursing home.
Services: Tuesday July 3, 2007 at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Roger Madden officiating. Burial: Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Marines.
Ardell was born on January 27, 1934, at Anthon, Iowa, the son of James and Julia (Claussen) Dicus. The family moved to Sioux City, where he attended Sioux City Public Schools. He joined the U.S. Marines and served during World War II. He married Bernice Kellogg. They were later divorced. Ardell married Gladys Dickey in 1979. He was a bus driver for Sioux City Transit for more than 17 years. Gladys died on Feb. 17, 2007. Ardell enjoyed bowling, fishing, playing cards and keno.
Survivors include a daughter, Doris McLaughlin and her husband, David of Las Vegas, Nev.; a son, Terry Dicus Ballantyne and his wife, Mary of Sioux City; a stepdaughter, Doreen Epstein and her husband, Marty of Marion, S.D.; two stepsons and their wives, Steve and Connie Dickey and Stuart and Pat Dickey, all of Sioux City; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, stepgrandchildren and great-stepgrandchildren; a brother, Ben Dicus of Sioux City; and two sisters, Bonner Draper and Jeanette and her husband, Martin, all of Sioux City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Bryan Ballantyne; and six brothers, James Dicus Jr., Dean Dicus, Charles Dicus, Dale Dicus, Jerry (Dicus) Schmidt and George Dicus
FRED OWEN THOMPSON 63, of Anthon passed away on Wednesday, June 13, 2007, at the V.A. Home in Marshalltown, Iowa, his home for nearly 11 years.
Services:Tuesday, June 19, 2007 at Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon, with Pastor Sheryl Ashley officiating. Burial: in Fairfield Cemetery, Rock Branch, Iowa, with military rites conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars, Sioux Valley Post 1750 and Mumford-Moon Post 79, both of Correctionville, Iowa, and the American Legion McNiff Post #389 of Anthon.
Fred was born on February 6, 1944, in Sioux City, Iowa, the first of seven children born to Fred Bennett and Norma Nettie (White) Thompson. He lived with his parents in El Paso, Texas, and Orlando, Florida, while his father served in the Army during World War II. The family returned to Iowa where Fred spent his childhood on a farm northwest of Anthon and he received his education at Anthon-Oto school. He was a member of the Anthon Advancers 4-H Club for several years, showing Shetland ponies at the Woodbury County Fair.
In 1970 Fred married Shirley Lindquist of Quimby, Iowa. They were the parents of two daughters, Ann Chere' who died shortly after birth on October 11, 1970, and Dixie Lynn who currently resides in Napa, California.
Fred was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1967, and spent one year in Vietnam, serving in the jungle near Hue where he drove a rations truck. He was honorably discharged in 1969. Fred had many health problems from the chemicals which had been sprayed on him in the jungle of Vietnam. He worked at Sioux Tools and Fimco in the Sioux City area until he suffered a massive stroke in February 1987 which left him totally handicapped. Fred lived in nursing homes at Lake City and Sergeant Bluff before being transferred to the VA Home in Marshalltown in July 1996 where he spent the remainder of his life.
Survivors include his daughter, Dixie and her fiancé, Tim Wilson, of Napa, California; his mother, Mrs. Norma Thompson of Correctionville; three brothers, Doug Thompson and wife Shirley of Correctionville, Norman Thompson and wife Laura of Browerville, Minnesota, and Steve Thompson and wife Sheryl of Sioux City; three sisters, Carol Carter of Ankeny, Iowa, Mrs. Mark (Joan) Meister of Correctionville and Mrs. Beau (Sandy) Ruleaux of Storm Lake; one uncle, Walter Thompson of Moville; and five aunts, Vertress Fitzpatrick of Plymouth, Minnesota; Doris Omvig of Urbandale, Iowa; and Betty Card, Ruth White and Clara "Tudy" Thompson all of Sioux City; plus many nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Fred; and by his daughter, Ann Chere'.
CLIFTON J. RENNEKER , 90, of Anthon passed away on Monday, June 11, 2007, at the
Correctionville Nursing Home in Correctionville, Iowa.
Services: Thursday, June 14, 2007 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Anthon. Burial: in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery at Anthon.
Clifton James Renneker was born on December 14, 1916, at Claremont, Minnesota to James and Bessie (Stephenson) Renneker. The family moved to a farm 6 miles northwest of Anthon when he was three years old. He attended country school during his elementary years west of Anthon and graduated in 1934 from Anthon High School.
On April 13, 1940 he married Eileen Anne Crilly in services at St. Joseph's
Catholic Church in Anthon. Cliff and Eileen raised their family and farmed the same ground his parents had farmed until they retired. In 1969, they moved in to Anthon. During his retirement, they enjoyed traveling. Cliff also loved to play golf and spent many joyful hours both golfing and doing volunteer work for the Anthon Golf Course. He could often be seen driving his golf cart to the course on a sunny day, even in winter. He enjoyed his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and always had time to share stories of his youth and countless bowls of ice cream with them. He was a true friend to all who knew him. He loved animals, gardening, cars, flying machines and discovering any new innovative inventions.
He will be fondly remembered by his two sons, four daughters and their
spouses, Jim and Joyce (Davis) Renneker of Warroad, Minnesota, Carol and Ray Orr of West Point, Nebraska, Joyce and Bob Tullis of Garland, Texas, Bill and Kathy (Lyon) Renneker of Brookings, South Dakota, Muriel and Dan McDermott of Breda, Iowa, and Mary and Peter Sorensen of State College, Pennsylvania; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews, friends and neighbors.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eileen; his parents; a brother, Albert
in infancy; and a grandson, Lee Orr.
HAZEL L MADDISON 87, formerly of Anthon passed way on Tuesday, June 5, 2007, in St. Louis, Missouri where she had made her home, to be near her daughter.
Services: will be Monday June 11, at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Anthon, with the Rev. Vickie Steffes officiating. Burial: will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be two hours prior to the service on Monday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon.
Hazel was born April 5, 1920 at Hamton, Saskatchewan, Canada to Earl and Barbara Hammond. She met Gilbert Maddison Jr. after returning to Iowa from living in Texas, when her parents decided to move to Iowa to make their home. She married Gilbert on August 31, 1943 at the Methodist Church at Anthon. The couple farmed and raised their two children; Roger and Garnet, on the family farm. Gilbert and Hazel were both active in the Methodist church, OES, and were also active in the Anthon Advancer's 4-H Club for many years. They retired in 1973 and moved into Anthon in 1987.
Survivors include her son Roger B. and his wife Anita Maddison, and her daughter Garnet and husband Dudley McGrath; grandchildren, Aaron, Ryan, Robyn, Tom, Linda, Terry, Todd, Betsy and Steve; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Gilbert B. "Buddy" Maddison.
ROBERTA PEARL PETERSEN 84, of Anthon passed away at the Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton Iowa on Tuesday, June 5, 2007.
Services: were held on Friday June 8, 2007 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Midway, rural Battle Creek, Iowa. Burial: in St. Paul Cemetery, rural Battle Creek, Iowa.
Roberta Pearl was born on January 27, 1923 to Robert Scates and Iva Pearl (Admire) Lewis at the family farm just north of Anthon. She attended rural schools as well as Anthon Public School and graduated from Anthon High School in 1941.
On September 14, 1941, she married Alfred Hamann. To this union a daughter, Janice, was born in 1943. Alfred was killed in Germany in October of 1944, during World War II.
On March 6, 1947, Roberta married Marvin Jens Petersen. Two
children were born to this union, a son, Byron, and a daughter, Rhonda.
Roberta and Marvin were members of St. Paul Lutheran Church at Midway, and Roberta was active in St. Paul Ladies Aid. She also taught Sunday
School for many years. She was a homemaker while her children grew up on the family farm east of Anthon and in the early 70's worked at the nursing home in Correctionville and touched many lives. She enjoyed her family, friends, flowers and gardening. The couple moved in to Anthon to retire.

Brian Fulk, Sarah and her husband, Russell McDaniels, and Zachary Boddicker
and his wife, Brooke; eight great-grandchildren, Grant and Mason Taylor,

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband Alfred; and three
brothers-in-law; Robert, Lester and Benjamin Petersen.
VERDA E. BEESON , 85, formerly of Anthon passed away on Saturday, May 26, 2007, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services: Wednesday May 30, 2007 at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Sioux City, with burial in the Correctionville Cemetery, Correctionville, Iowa. Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon, was in charge of arrangements.
Verda Ellen Beeson was born Oct. 25, 1921, to Emil and Hattie (Hammond) Hansen, rural Danbury, Iowa. The family moved to near Anthon when Verda was a small child. In her youth, she helped her parents on their dairy farm and worked with her brother delivering milk in the town of Anthon.
On Aug. 29, 1938, she married Raymond Beeson in Elk Point, S.D. The couple farmed, and Verda worked hard on the farm, often driving farm equipment. The couple retired in the mid 1960s, moving into Anthon. They lived in Sioux City for a short time, then moved to Lawton. Ray passed away on September 11, 2002.
She was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church in Sioux City, the Anthon Women's Club and taught Sunday School for many years at the Anthon United Methodist Church. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and spending winters in the southwest. She was an avid Cubs fan. It was important to her to visit the cemeteries each Memorial Day to honor deceased family members. Along with her hard work, she was known as a good cook. She dearly loved her grandchildren and enjoyed doing things with them.
Those left to cherish her memory include two daughters, Barbara and husband, Jerry Martin of Marcus, Iowa, and Connie and husband, Gary Edwards of Kansas City, Missouri; two sons and their wives, Larry and Mary Lou Beeson of Wisner, Nebraska, and Gary and Linda Beeson of Anthon, Iowa; 10 grandchildren, Todd (Kim) Martin and their children, Jamie, Dylan and Cole of Littleton, Colo., Kent Martin of Sioux City, Krystal (Mike) McBride and their children, Savannah and Shelby of Pierson, Iowa, Stacy (Shari) Beeson and their children, Joe and David of Kansas City, Mo., Stephanie (Joel) Clutts of Des Moines, Lisa (Charles) Martinson and their child, Lizzie of Iowa City, Iowa, Blake Beeson of Sioux City and his special friend Disa, Jennifer (Jason) Alwood and their children, Noah and Easton of Kansas City, Mo., Brandon (Lindsey) Thomsen and their child, Madison of Beaufort, S.C., and Clint Thomsen of Moville, Iowa. Verda is also survived by a sister and her husband, Donna and Richard Hamann of Anthon, Iowa, and nieces and nephews as well as other friends and family.
Along with her husband Ray, she was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Kenneth and Donald; and one sister Ruby.
MICHAEL PARKER 47, of Sioux City, and a 1978 graduate of Anthon-Oto High School passed away on Saturday, April 21, 2007, at his residence. Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday April 26, 2007 at the United Methodist Church in Moville, Iowa. Burial will be in the Kingsley Cemetery, Kingsley, Iowa. Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon is in charge of arrangements. Michael Ray Parker was born to George and Maxine (Lindgren) Parker on March 25, 1960, in Le Mars, Iowa. Mike grew up in Anthon and he loved going to his grandpa's farm and driving the old "B" JD tractor. He continued his education at Western Iowa Tech Community College in Sioux City and began his career as a computer operator at IPS, now known as Mid American Energy, in Sioux City and Des Moines. He later moved to Phoenix, Arizona where he was employed with America West Airlines. Mike returned to Sioux City five years ago to be closer to his family and friends. He loved helping people and when he resided in Des Moines, he was active in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program. He also collected John Deere memorabilia his whole life. Those left to cherish their memories of Mike include his parents, George and Maxine, both of Sioux City; his sisters, Mitzi McGill and Amy Parker, both of Sioux City; his nephews, Derek McGill and his wife, Rachel of Novato, Calif., and Cade Parker of Sioux City; his brother-in-law, Dennis McGill of Sioux City; a family friend, Ronnie Riser of Sioux City; and many great friends and family members. Mike was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Ida and Nels Lindgren; his paternal grandparents, George Sr. and Mary Parker; his step-grandfather, Arlo Jorgensen; and his dog, Missy. Pallbearers will be Greg Hayworth, Gerald Jerman, David Raausch, Jake Oien,Tracy Lewis and Bill Hilger. Honorary pallbearers will be Derek McGill, Cade Parker and Steve Schramm. LaMONA (HUFFMAN) WELTE 74, passed away at her home in Anthon, on Tuesday, April 10, 2007, Services: Friday April 13, 2007 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon, with the Rev. Terry Roder officiating. Burial: St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery at Anthon. A Catholic Daughters of America rosary and a vigil wake service were held on Thursday, April 12, 2007 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon. Arrangements are under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon. Lois LaMona Welte was born on her grandparents farm southeast of Anthon on January 8, 1933, to Marvin and Mildred "Marie" (Jerman) Huffman. She lived all her life at Anthon. She was very musically inclined; in voice, dance, as well as the piano and organ. On June 13, 1950 she married Louis "Louie" Welter in services at Merrill, Iowa. The couple lived in the Anthon and Oto area for over 56 years and raised their family of five children here. LaMona was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where she played the organ for many years. She also was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and was a hospice volunteer for a number of years. She had a bright spirit, and a sense of humor that went along with the smile she seemed to always have available. She loved her family. Survivors include her husband, Louis; four children, Linda and her husband, John Dixon of Anthon, Steve Welte of Anthon, Brad Welte of Verdi, Nevada, and Cindy and her husband, David "Butch" Harlow of Anthon; a daughter-in-law, Deb Welte of Anthon; eight grandchildren, Peter, Christopher, and Lucas Dixon, Leslie (Dixon) Beeson, and Nicholas Dixon, Jacob Welte, Syndey Welte and Lindsey (Welte) Chettinger; three step-grandchildren, Ashley, Jamie and Katie Hanson; six great-grandchildren, Lauren, Benjamin and Hunter Dixon, Weston, Jade and Olivia Beeson; a great-step-grandchild, Preslee Hope; one sister, Sharon Costa of Reno, Nevada; one brother and his wife, Larry and Karen Huffman of Spirit Lake, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. JUDY (FITCHNER) RIECKMANN 61, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away on Monday, April 2, 2007, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines. Services: Friday April 6, 2007 at the Lutheran Church of the Cross in Altoona, Iowa, where she was a member. Burial: Altoona Cemetery, Altoona, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Hamilton Funeral Home in Des Moines. Judy was born on February 4, 1946, at Cushing, Iowa to Ronald and Alice Fitchner. She graduated with the class of '64 from Anthon-Oto High School. She then attended Wayne State College in Wayne, Neb. In 1966, she married Ronald Rieckmann. She had been employed at the Legacy Bank in Altoona. She is survived by her husband, Ronald; one daughter, Jennifer Corrick of Des Moines; her mother, Alice (Phil) Hageman of Sioux City; her sisters, Peggy (Jack) Hansen of Decorah, Iowa, Penny (Keith) Hansen of Correctionville, Iowa, and Paula Fitchner of Sioux Falls, S.D.; her brother, Jim Fitchner of Lincoln, Nebraska; her grandmother, Lalia Downey of Correctionville, Iowa; an aunt, Mary Alice Drossel; and 12 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by an infant sister, Rhonda Alice Fitchner; her father, Ronald Fitchner; and grandfather, Roy Downey.
DOROTHY E. SMITH 82, of Mapleton passed away on Friday, March 23, 2007. Services were Tuesday, March 27, 2007 at St. John's Methodist Church in Mapleton with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, Anthon, Iowa. Dorothy Elizabeth was born to Phirman Ray and Rachel Cecelia (Burow) Downing on September 2, 1924 at Anthon. She attended school at Anthon and in 1942 married Daniel Deeds. The couple had one daughter; Cecelia "Tootie". In 1946 Dorothy married Charles "Chuck" Smith. A second daughter; Lydia was born. In 1955 the family moved to California and moved back to Mapleton in 1974. Charles passed away on June 15, 1986. Dorothy was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 496 of Mapleton and the VFW Auxiliary Unit 9124 of Oto. She was a gifted quilter and enjoyed crocheting. Survivors include her two daughters, Tootie and husband Jerry Bumstead of Mapleton, and Lydia Allen of Cave Junction, Oregon; four grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, Charles "Chub" Downing of Anthon, and one sister, Mary Ellen Abbott of Mt. View, California, along with several nieces and nephews. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Charles, and three sisters, Gladys Ryan, Rachel "Bernice" Kroll, and Betty J. Berning.
JUANITA (ROARK) RICKABAUGH 81, of Belvidere, Illinois, and formerly of Anthon, Iowa passed away on Tuesday, March 13, 2007, at Maple Crest Care Center, surrounded by her loving family, following a lingering illness. Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday March 17, 2007 at Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon. Burial:in Oak Hill Cemetery at Anthon. Juanita was born at Correctionville, Iowa, on September 10, 1925, to Ed and Lena (Petersen) Roark. On September 19, 1941 she married Everett Rickabaugh in Rockport, Missouri. The couple farmed in Iowa and dairy farmed in Bloomer, Wisconsin for eight years before moving to Belvidere, Illinois. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where she was active in the Ladies Missionary Society, the deacons board and was a Sunday School teacher. Survivors include her children, Nancy (John) Pollnow of Marhsfield, Wisconsin, Sally (Bill) West of Poplar Grove, Illinois, Kathy (Lenny/Jesse) Jacobson of Belvidere, Illinois, Gene (Sheryl) and Dan (Pamela) Rickabaugh, all of Belvidere, Jim (Lynn) of Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, and Bob (Becky) Rickabaugh of Evansville, Indiana; 28 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.
MAIZEL H. (SCHEER) BUETTNER 86, of Anthon, Iowa passed away on Sunday March 4, 2007 at the Elmwood Care Center in Onawa, Iowa. Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 8, 2007 at 1:30 pm at Trinity Lutheran Church in Anthon, Iowa with Pastor Andrew Carlson officiating. A prayer service will be held Wednesday March 7, 2007 at 5:00 pm at Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Anthon. Visitation will be held from 2:00pm to 7:00 pm on Wednesday March 7, 2007 at Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon. Maizel Henrietta (Scheer) Buettner was born on August 4, 1920 to Henry Joseph and Johanna (Dohrman) Scheer at the family farm in Oto Township, Section 14, Danbury, Iowa. She received her education in the country schools. On December 2, 1945 she married Lawrence T. Buettner at St. John's Lutheran Church, Climbing Hill, Iowa. After Lawrence's discharge from the Army the couple started farming east of Anthon and she lived on the farm until she entered the nursing home in 2005. Lawrence passed away on May 9, 2000. Maizel was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church at Anthon and served as circle chairman at different times in the church and also held offices in the LWML at Trinity. She enjoyed baking, gardening, crocheting, and quilting. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and picnics and get-togethers with all her brothers and sisters and their families. Survivors include two sons; Marvin and his wife Vickie Buettner, of Anthon, and their three daughters; Stephanie and husband Dennis Miller and daughter Kelsie of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Molly and husband Bill Craig and children Zachary, Christian, and Billi Katherine of Danbury, Iowa; Carrie and husband Thomas Kreber Jr. and son Jack of Omaha, Nebraska. Dale and his wife Pam Buettner of Anthon, and their four children, Jonathon still at home, Adam Buettner and his daughter Kaylyn of Anthon, Christine Buettner and son Eann of Sioux City, Iowa; Jeff Roost of Sioux City, Iowa and his daughter Brooklynn; one sister Lorraine Scheer and one brother Alfred Scheer both of Correctionville, Iowa; a sister-in-law Lucille Buettner of Anthon; and numerous nieces and nephews. Maizel was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lawrence; one daughter Marilyn; six brothers Aldre, Lester, Vern, Henry, Arlo, and Edwin and his wife May Scheer; and three sisters Alverta and her husband Ted Hauschildt, Sylvia and her husband Carl Wasmund, Helma and her husband Don Krueger, and one brother-in-law Harold Buettner.
LEO M. BARBY 90, of Anthon passed away on Thursday, Feb. 22, 2007, at the Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center in Correctionville, Iowa. Services were held Saturday, Feb 24, 2007 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Anthon. Burial: Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City. Arrangements were under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Home at Anthon.
Leo Melvin was born on April 2, 1916 to Frank and Laura (Harris) Barby at Turin, Iowa. He graduated from Hornick (Iowa) High School, where he was considered northwest Iowa's outstanding basketball player. He also excelled in baseball and bowling.
On November 2, 1939 he married Elna F. Wiedemann in services at the Lutheran Church in Rockport Missouri. He served in the Armed Forces during World War II as a medic. After his discharge from the service Leo managed Quaker Oats Grain Elevator for 25 years, Cargill for seven years, Luton Ag Services Company and Farmers Elevator in Sergeant Bluff before the couple retired and moved to Anthon in 1981.
Leo was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Rockport, Missouri in 1942. He became very active in church work at St. John's Lutheran Church in Climbing Hill, Iowa. He served in various offices including Sunday School superintendent and teaching Sunday School for 30 years. He was currently a member of Trinity Lutheran Church at Anthon. He also served in the Sergeant Bluff-Luton School board. He was a member of the American Legion George Nelson Post of Sergeant Bluff and the VFW. He loved dancing and sports.
Survivors include his wife, Elna; a son, Dr. Curtiss Barby of St. Louis, Missouri; a daughter Greta and her husband, Carney Foy of Silver City, New Mexico; two granddaughters, Carston and Caytlyn Foy; and several nieces.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents; and three sisters.
FAY MAXINE WOOD 88, of Lebanon, Missouri died Saturday morning, February 17, 2007, at her home in Lebanon. She was born October 21, 1918, near Lebanon, Missouri, to Roy and Goldie Lillard Davis, who preceded her in death. She also was preceded in death by two great-grandchildren, Justin Caudle and Misty Wood. Besides being a devoted homemaker and mother, she was a civil service worker in the dry cleaning business at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, for 25 years. She was baptized at the Abo Christian Church while she was a young lady. Survivors include two sons, David Wood and his wife, Ethel, and Lee Wood and his wife, Susie, all of Lebanon; a daughter, Karen Riggle, of Asher, Oklahoma; a brother, Bob Davis and his wife, Juanita, of Lebanon; a sister, Juanita Holler, of Lebanon; ten grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Services for Fay Maxine Wood will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 21, 2007, in the Holman-Howe Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Uder officiating. Burial will be in the Lillard Cemetery, under the direction of Holman-Howe Funeral Home of Lebanon. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. Maxine’s family came to the Anthon, Iowa, area in 1920 and it was in Anthon in December 1928 that her Mother passed away and was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery.
FRANCES LOUISE ADMIRE 64, formerly of Anthon passed away on Wednesday, January 17, 2007, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness. Memorial services were held Friday, January 19, 2007 at the Faith Christian Fellowship Church in Sioux City. Burial will be at a later date. Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Louise was born on October 27, 1942, to James William and Dolores (Hiatt) Admire at Cherokee, Iowa. She was raised in the Cherokee and Cleghorn, Iowa, area, and graduated from Westfield (Iowa) High School. On July 14, 1963 Louise married Marvin J. Godberson at Trinity Lutheran Church in Anthon. The couple farmed west of Anthon. In 1985 Louise moved to Sioux City and made her home there. She was a member of Faith Christian Fellowship Church and enjoyed country music, crafts, movies, caring for others and her grandchildren. Survivors include one daughter, Caroline LaJune Barnes of Anthon, Iowa; four grandchildren, Amanda Nelson, Shawn Nelson, Jacob Barnes all of Anthon and Justice Isom of Sioux City; a sister and her husband, Donna and Clark Isom of Sioux City; four nephews; and a niece. Those preceding her in death were her parents; her grandparents; one son; one grandson; and a sister.
PHILLIP "DUTCH" COLLINS 69, of Sioux City died unexpectedly on Thursday, January 11, 2007, in Sioux City.

Phillip was born on September 18, 1937, to Lewis and Olive (Mohrhauser) Collins on the family farm near Mapleton, Iowa. He graduated from Oto High School in 1956.
On October 5, 1957 he married Sharon K. Zerfing in Oto. They resided in Oto for a brief time before moving to Sioux City where the couple made their home. Dutch worked in the lumber yard business for over 40 years; retiring in 2001. He was a member of Crescent Park United Methodist Church, the Masons, Tyrian Lodge 508 AF&AM, where he was a past master and currently the secretary. He belonged to the Sioux City York Rite, where he served as head of all three bodies. Dutch was also a member of the Sioux City Scottish Rite, the Abu Bekr Shrine and M.I.D.L. Club. He was an avid gardener, a very devoted family man and friend to many.
Survivors include his wife, Sharon; three children and their spouses, Jacki and Mark King of Racine, Wisconsin, Lori and Mark Wahlberg of Sioux City, and Greg and Michelle Collins of Sioux City; three brothers and their wives, Norman "Stub" and Ethel Collins of North Sioux City, Maurice "Pete" and Vera Collins of Anthon, Iowa, and William "Bill" and Delores Collins of Kingsley, Iowa; two sisters and their husbands, Marcene "Rusty" and Joe Guenther of South Sioux City, Nebraska, and Mary Ann "Toots" and Ron Ashby of Little Falls, Minnesota; five grandchildren, Jessica King, Erin King, Teri Verdoorn, Ian Collins and Brittany Collins; two great-grandchildren, Haley Lynn and Alexis Kay; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Albert Frank Burow was born March 8, 1920, at Cushing, Iowa, to Frank and Ida (Sands) Burow. He grew up in the area and graduated from Cushing High School in 1937.
On December 21, 1941, he married Hertha Sailer at the parsonage in South Sioux City, Nebraska. The couple started farming on his father's farm six and one half miles south of Cushing. They moved to Anthon, Iowa in 1984 but remained involved in the farming operation.
Albert was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, rural Battle Creek, Iowa where he was on the Dart Ball team and held various offices in the church. He also was a member of the Gideon's.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Hertha; a daughter and her husband, Betty and Bill Ashley of Mapleton; a son and his wife, the Rev. Gaylen and Linda Burow of Bonnor Springs, Kan.; five grandchildren, Steve Ashley, Shauna and her husband, Tim Hugen, Eliza Christian, Emilee Burow and Evan Burow; two great-grandchildren, Jessica and Bryan Hugen; a nephew and his wife, Chuck and Mary Jo Harderson and their family of Corning, Iowa. Frank was preceded in death by his parents; a sister and her husband, Dora and Charles Harderson; and a nephew, Dennis Harderson.

MARY B. KETELSEN 85, of Smithland, Iowa, and a former long time Anthon resident passed away on Saturday, January 6, 2007, at the Kingsley Nursing & Rehab Center in Kingsley, Iowa.

Mary Bernice Ketelsen was born January 26, 1921, on the family farm, near Anthon, to John Henry and Anna (Beyer) Sands.
She married Carl M. Ketelsen on November 30, 1942. The couple farmed just north and east of Anthon until Carl's death on June 19, 1968. Mary stayed on the farm until 1975, when she moved to Smithland. She entered the Kingsley Nursing & Rehab Center in November, 2006.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Anthon and liked to garden, sew and cook.
Survivors include three sons, Bill Ketelsen and Don Ketelsen, both of Anthon and Larry Ketelsen of Kingsley; a brother and his wife, John and Darlene Sands of Moville, Iowa; and a sister-in-law, Vivian Sands of Butterfield, Minn.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, three sons, Junior, Thomas and an infant son; one daughter, Mary Lou Ketelsen; two sisters, Annie and Frieda; and six brothers, Albert, Louis, Rudolph, Fred, Oscar and an infant brother.

LaVONNE FERNS DRAEGERT , 72 died October 22, 2006 at her home in Littleton, Colorado.
Lavonne Ferns Draegert was born June 27, 1934 to Will E. "Bill" and Florence Goodman Ferns.
She graduated from Anthon High School in 1952 and received her teaching certificate from Wayne State College; Wayne, Nebraska in 1954. She taught in Cherokee and Humboldt, Iowa. In 1960 she received her B.A. in education from Mankato State College, Mankato, Minnesota.
The Reverend Clayton Wittstruck married Lavonne and Wilbert "Al" Draegert on June 12, 1960 at the United Methodist Church in Spirit Lake, Iowa. They moved to Colorado in 1961 and Lavonne began substitute teaching in the Littleton Public Schools. She later taught kindergarten full-time at Runyan, Peabody and Wilder Elementary Schools. In 1992 she was a Colorado Teacher of the Year and retired later that year.
Lavonne was a devoted wife, mother and teacher. She was a caring person who volunteered her services generously at the Shepard of the Hills Lutheran Church and the Johnson Care Center.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Will E. and Florence Goodman Ferns and a nephew, Pat Harder.
Survivors include her husband of 46 years, Al; two daughters JoLynn (Reverend Harold) Bender of Quincy, Illinois; Kerri (Jeff) Walenta of Olney, Maryland; seven grandchildren, Douglas, Kevin, Patrick, Kelli Jo and Joseph Bender; Madison and Megan Walenta; sister, Virginia Harder of Littleton; brother, R. JANE MARIE SAILORS 77, of Perry, Ohio, and a former resident of Anthon, passed away on Friday, December 22, 2006, at a Chandler, Arizona hospital from complications following a broken hip.
Services: Saturday, December 30, 2006 Saturday at the Cathedral of the Epiphany, in Sioux City, Iowa. Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Sioux City, Iowa.
Jane Marie Taggart was born to Thomas L and Gertrude (Brennan) Taggart on April 9, 1929, in Sioux City. She attended Blessed Sacrament Grade School, Cathedral High School and Briar Cliff College.
On May 30, 1951 she was united in marriage to Frank E. Sailors in Sioux City, Iowa. The couple had six children, two of whom died in infancy. She was a devoted wife, loving sister and mother and a wonderful grandmother and great-grandmother. She thoroughly enjoyed her family, supported their activities and was so proud of all their accomplishments.
She and her family lived in several communities, where Frank taught, coached and was a school principal. Upon retirement, they moved to Arizona to be near their two daughters. In 1999, Frank and Jane moved to Perry, Ohio, to be with their son and his family after the death of their daughter-in-law. Frank and Jane celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on May 30, 2001. Frank died 4 months later, in September 2001 following a brief battle with cancer. Jane continued to live in Perry and spent time in Arizona and Sioux City with her children and their families.
She enjoyed reading, a variety of music, crossword puzzles and swimming; being a two-time gold medalist at the Senior Olympics.
She will be deeply missed by her family and many friends, whose lives were enriched by knowing her.
Those left to cherish her memory besides many friends and extended family members include a daughter, Mickey and her husband, Roger Lloyd and their children, Nathan Lloyd and his wife, Meggen and their son, Jack; and Nicole and her husband, Chris Erickson and their children, Anna and Ethan, all of Sioux City; one son, Dr. Frank Sailors and his children, Courtney, Brennan and Elisse, all of Perry, Ohio; a daughter, Mary and her husband, Phillip Calvillo and their children, Andrew, Sarah and Peter of Arizona; a daughter, Amy Sailors of Arizona; one sister, Joan DeVries of Davenport, Iowa; and a brother, Terence Taggart of Vermillion, South Dakota.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Thomas C. Taggart; her husband, Frank; two infant sons, Scott Thomas and Terence Mark; and her daughter-in-law, Traci.

VELMA DORIS OERTEL 99, of Anthon passed away on Friday, December 22, 2006, at the Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center in Correctionville, Iowa. Services:Wednesday December 27, 2006 at the Church of Christ in Anthon, with Dr. Emery Killian officiating. Burial: Oak Hill Cemetery at Anthon. Velma Doris Oertel was born on Halloween, October 31, 1907, near Anthon, to Thomas E. and Mary E. (Coon) Hayworth. She grew up and was educated in the Anthon area. On Dec. 24, 1929, she was united in marriage to Charles Fred Oertel at the Christian Church in Sioux City. The couple lived in Sioux City for three years, during which time she worked in the alteration department of J.C. Penney's and did restaurant work. They then moved to Anthon and Velma worked as a cook at the Anthon High School and was a custodian there along with her husband. Velma was a member of the Church of Christ at Anthon, the Rebecca Lodge and the Naomi Circle at the church. Over the years, she belonged to several card clubs. She enjoyed bowling, playing cards, crocheting, fishing and playing bingo. Being known as having a "green thumb", she also loved to be out working in the yard, and tending to her flowers. Survivors include a daughter, Janet Kelsheimer of Anthon; two sons and their wives, Tom and Joyce Oertel of Boydton, Virginia, and Roger and Jan Oertel of Loveland, Colorado; eight grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; a special niece, Jan Munsen of Sioux City; and many other nieces and nephews. Velma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Charles on November 21, 2000; an infant daughter, Mary Agnes; a son-in-law, 'Dean' Kelsheimer; four grandsons; a great-granddaughter; three brothers, Gracen, Vester, and Perry Hayworth, and a sister, Edna Munsen.
EILEEN ANNE (CRILLY) RENNEKER , age 87, of Anthon, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, December 14, 2006 at the Correctionville Nursing Home. Services were at St. Joseph Church in Anthon on Tuesday, December 19, 2006 with Rev. Terry Roder officiating. Visitation was on Monday, December 18. The Rosary was led by Catholic Daughters of America at 3:30 p.m., and a prayer service was held at 7:00 p.m. Burial was at St. Joseph's Catholic cemetery in Anthon.
Eileen Anne Crilly was born October 28, 1919 in Danbury, Iowa. She was the fifth of ten children, five sons and five daughters, born to Hugh and Florence (O'Connor) Crilly. She attended the Pat King School in Morgan Township, St. Joseph's Catholic School in Anthon, and graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic School at Emerson, Nebraska in 1938.
Clifton Renneker and Eileen Crilly were united in marriage on April 13, 1940 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Anthon, with Father A. M. Conlon officiating. This was a double wedding in which Eileen's sister, Mary Agnes Crilly and Vincent S. Burke were also married. Eileen and Cliff enjoyed 66 years of happy marriage until her passing on Cliff's 90th birthday.
Eileen was a loving and devoted wife and mother who enjoyed spending time with family. She spent twelve years as the librarian for the Anthon Public Library and worked for Collins Agency in Anthon. She inspired a lifetime of reading enjoyment for her children and many young readers who visited the library. Her many interests included needlework, reading, working crossword and jigsaw puzzles, playing cards, cooking, and gardening. She loved to bake and sew for her family. Among the organizations Eileen was involved in were Catholic Daughters, 4-H, and American Legion Auxiliary, and a member of the Northwest Regional Resource Advisory Board for public libraries.
Eileen will be fondly remembered by her husband Cliff, two sons and four daughters: Jim and Joyce (Davis) Renneker of Warroad, Minnesota; Carol and Ray Orr of West Point, Nebraska; Joyce and Bob Tullis of Dallas, Texas; Bill and Kathy (Lyon) Renneker of Brookings, South Dakota; Muriel and Dan McDermott of Breda, Iowa; Mary and Peter Sorensen of State College, Pennsylvania; twelve grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren; her brother Mike Crilly of Oklahoma City; her sister, Pauline Sorensen of Bancroft, Nebraska; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Eileen was preceeded in death by her parents, sisters Penelope (Nelle) Pearson, Mary Burke, Sister Alice Marie Crilly, and brothers Francis, Wayne (Bob), Ralph (Bud), and Eugene; and grandson, Lee Orr.

ANDREW FRANKLIN "FRANK" BOLLIN 78, of Anthon died unexpectedly Thursday, November 2, 2006, while farming near Anthon. Services: Monday November 6, 2006 at Salem Lutheran Church rural Correctionville, Iowa. Burial: Oak Hill Cemetery, Anthon. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Sunday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon. Frank was born to E. Ray Bollin and Opal B. (Longwell) Bollin on March 21, 1928 and spend his early years in the Quimby-Washta areas, then the family moved to the Kingsley, Iowa area where Frank graduated from school. On Novmeber 19, 1950 Frank married Wilma E Meister at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moville, Iowa. The couple started their career in farming north of Rock Branch and later purchased their own farmed west of Anthon. Frank was a Pioneer Seed corn dealer for many years and was involved with their church and the Anthon Community Club. Frank is survived by his wife Wilma, sons Wayne and Brice and grandchildren.
CHARLOTTE RAE MAMMEN 75, of Correctionville, Iowa passed away on Saturday, October 21, 2006 in Glendale, Arizona with her children at her bedside, under Hospice care at the home of her daughter after an eight-month battle with cancer. Services: Saturday October 28, 2006 at Grace Lutheran Church in Correctionville, with the Rev. Andrew Carlson officiating. Burial: Correctionville Cemetery. Barker Funeral Home in Correctionville is in charge of arrangements. Charlotte was born July 16, 1931, near Anthon, Iowa, to Ernest and Edna (Moeller) Huss. She was raised in Correctionville by her aunt and uncle, Lilly and Bill Hansen. On July 3, 1950, in Lakefield, Minnesota she married Ray William Mammen. In addition to being a homemaker, she worked at the Correctionville Nursing Home. In her later years, she worked at Anderson Sundries in Correctionville. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Women's Missionary League. She also belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed her grandchildren, crocheting and tending her flowers. She is survived by one daughter, Linda Steemke and her special friend, Johnny Benavidez; two sons and their wives, Mark and Cindy and Doug and Sandi; and four grandchildren, Shannon Steemke, Stacy Blum, Stephanie Mammen and Kael Mammen. Charlotte was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two sisters, Norma Whitesell and Lavonne Mildenstein; and two brothers, Donald and Gerald Huss.
CHARLES EDWARD ASHLEY 71, of Merrill passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, October 16, 2006, at his home. Charles Edward Ashley, better known as "Ed" by many friends and former customers around Anthon, was born on November 21, 1934, in Leeds, Iowa. He was the first son born to Marvin and Dorothy (Court) Ashley. He grew up near Anthon and attended Anthon Community School, graduating with the class of '53 on May 20 of that year. Ed served with the U.S. Army in Anchorage, Alaska from 1957 to 1959, and he was honorably discharged from the Army Reserves in 1963. On January 15, 1961 Ed was united in marriage to Connie Lewis. The couple were blessed with three wonderful children, JoLynne, Tim and Tom. Ed worked for the Quaker Oats Company in Anthon as well as in Hancock, Minnesota. Ed and Connie brought the family back to Anthon and he began working for Terra Chemical International in Anthon for several years and was transferred to Merrill, Iowa until he retired in 2000. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, tinkering in the garage, woodworking, writing short stories and spending time with his four grandchildren. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and brother. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Survivors include his wife, Connie of Merrill; a daughter, JoLynne Reimert of Anthon; a son and his wife, Tim and Terri Ashley of Ames, Iowa; a son, Tom Ashley of Merrill; four grandchildren, Brittany Reimert of Anthon, Anthony and Anna Ashley of Ames, Iowa, and Sam Ashley of Holstein, Iowa; three brothers, Bill (Betty) Ashley of Mapleton, Iowa, Charlie (Diane) Ashley of Woodbine, Iowa, and Art (Dee) Ashley of Anthon; four sisters, Beverly (Les) Hueser of Hubbard, Iowa, Jean (Rich) Petersen of Anthon, Joyce (Cal) Gothier of Anthon and Sheryl Ashley of Anthon; and numerous nieces and nephews. Ed was preceded in death by her his parents; and an infant grandson, Mason Ashley.
SISTER ALICE MARIE CRILLY 82, of Dubuque, Iowa, formerly of Anthon and several Siouxland communities, passed away on Monday, October 2, 2006, at Mount Loretto Motherhouse in Dubuque. Services were held on Friday, October 6, 2006 at Mount Loretto. Burial was in Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa. Arrangements were under the direction of Leonard Funeral and Crematory in Dubuque. Sister Alice Marie was born to Hugh and Florence Crilly on January 4, 1924, near Anthon. She entered the Sisters of Presentation on September 6, 1942, and professed her vows on May 3, 1948. Sister Alice Marie's music teaching career, spanning 43 years, took her to the Iowa towns of Farley, Mason City, Algona, Lawler, Clare, Storm Lake, Key West, Sheldon and Bankston. She also taught at Timber Lake, South Dakota and Monticello, Minnesota. She taught piano, voice, organ, violin and classroom music to grades kindergarten through eighth. She also gave private lessons. She enjoyed working with parish choirs and training cantors for liturgies. Sister Alice Marie retired to Mount Loretto in Dubuque in 1989 and celebrated her diamond jubilee (60 years) in 2003. In retirement, she continued with community service, prayer, and her love of crafts until her death. Survivors include her sisters, Eileen Renneker of Anthon, and Pauline Sorensen; a brother, Michael Crilly; nieces, nephews and the Sisters of the Presentation with whom she shared her life for 64 years. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Mary Burke and Nelle Pearson; and her brothers, Francis, Wayne, Ralph and Eugene.

KENNETH A. STRATTON 82, of Oto passed away unexpectedly on Monday, August 14, 2006, after being stricken at home. Memorial services :Thursday August 17, 2006 at the Oto United Church of Christ in Oto, with the Rev. Karen Handke officiating. Graveside services Oto Cemetery, military rites were conducted by the American Legion Henry McKenna Post #651 as well as the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #9124, both of Oto. Kenneth Aaron Stratton was born on November 29, 1923 to Elias and Edna (Beaver) Stratton, near Oto. He attended country school for eight years and graduated from Oto High School in 1941. He entered the U.S. Army on February 12, 1945 and served in the Pacific, Guam and Saipan. He was honorably discharged on November 26, 1946. On December 21, 1946 he and Donna Jean Benton were united in marriage. The couple farmed near Oto, and Kenny also worked in area grain elevators and did carpentry work. He enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, craft work with his wife, fishing and hunting. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a member of the Oto United Church of Christ, where he held the office of clerk and was a lifetime board member and the maintenance chairman. He was a lifetime member of the Oto Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9124 and a 60-year member of American Legion Henry McKenna Post 651, where he served as post commander for 10 years. Survivors include his wife Donna; his children, Norman Stratton of Urbandale, Iowa, and Jerry Stratton and his wife, Yvette, of Moville, Iowa; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, T.J. and Christy Stratton and Connor of Indianapolis, Indiana, Casey and Jill Stratton and Jacey, Blake and Hanna of Moville, Iowa, Kristopher Stratton and Taylor of Moville, Iowa, Lisa Stratton of Denver, Colorado, and Diane and Brian Weber and Jackson of Waukee, Iowa; and a sister, Maureta Wiefenbach of Sloan, Iowa. Kenny was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Marvin, Ivan and Cecil Stratton; two sisters, Muriel Uhl and Lorena Miller; and a daughter-in-law, Norma Stratton.
Dr.BERNICE LAMB 93, of Anthon passed away on Saturday, August 12, 2006, at a Sioux City nursing home. Services were Tuesday, August 15, 2006 at Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon and Burial at Fairfield Cemetery Rock Branch, rural Correctionville, Iowa. Bernice was to Milton and Grace (Renneker) Lamb on January 23, 1913, in Brush, Colorado. At the age of six, the family moved to Anthon and then to Milbank, South Dakota. Bernice attended country schools and graduated from Milbank High School in 1930. It was after her high school graduation that the family returned to Anthon. Bernice completed her normal school training at Correctionville in 1936 and received her elementary teaching degree from Western Union College in Le Mars, Iowa in 1938. She received her bachelor of science degree from the University of Minnesota in 1945, her master of arts in education from the University of Minnesota in 1951 and her doctorate in reading from the University of Missouri in 1964. She was on the faculty of the University of Minnesota, State College of Iowa (UNI) and Central Missouri State College. Bernice spent her adult life in the field of education. She taught at various levels. It was in the 1960's when Bernice returned to Anthon to assist in the care of her father. She completed her full-time career in education at Hunt Elementary School in Sioux City from 1969 to 1978. Later in life, she did substitute teaching in Anthon. She was a member of Kappa Delta PI, PI Lambda Theta, International Reading Association, National Council for Teachers of English as well as other national and state organizations. Bernice had a genuine love for the land. She always maintained a garden of flowers and tomatoes up into her late 80s. She also had a lifetime love for education and teaching at all levels. Survivors include two nephews and their wives, Tom and Nancy Bishop and Dave and Mary Bishop of Sioux City; a niece and her husband, Rebecca and David Cadwell of Panama City, Fla.; four great nieces; three great nephews; and four great-great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Mrs. Melvyn H.(Marvel) Bishop.
CECIL H. STRATTON 89, a former Oto area resident passed away on Monday, July 3, 2006 at his residence in Sioux City, Iowa. Memorial services: Armstrong Chapel in Mapleton, Iowa, with the Rev. Karen Handke officiating. Burial will be in Little Sioux Township Cemetery, Smithland, Iowa. Cecil Hubert Stratton was born Feb. 27, 1917, in Mapleton, Iowa, the son of Elias H. and Edna B. (Beaver) Stratton. He attended country school in Woodbury County, where he later farmed. He operated the Ideal Cafe in Oto, Iowa from 1951 to 1958. He then worked as a bridge foreman for Woodbury County for 12 years and for Sioux Tools for 15 years, retiring in 1989. He was a member of United Church of Christ in Oto, Iowa, the International Association of Mechanist Union and various Senior Citizens groups. Survivors include a son, Les Stratton of Denver, Colo.; two daughters and their husbands, Cecilia and Doug Harding of South Sioux City and Rita and Ron Collins of Hubbard, Neb.; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Kenneth and Donna Stratton of Oto; and a sister, Maureta Weifenbach of Sloan, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Lorena Miller and Muriel Uhl; and two brothers, Marvin and John Stratton.
KATHY (ROGGATZ) RYAN 43, of Sloan passed away on Tuesday, June 27, 2006, at her residence. Kathy had leukemia. Services: Friday June 30, 2006 at Evangelical Covenant Church with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City. Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon, Iowa is in charge of arrangements. Kathy Ann was born on April 23, 1963, in Sioux City, to LaVern and Ingeborg (Kuhtz) Roggatz. She grew up near Oto, Iowa, and graduated from Anthon-Oto High School with the class of 1981. After graduation, she worked at Morey's and Raymond's in Sioux City and Wells Fargo Security at Port Neal.
On August 6, 1983, she married Patrick Ryan in Climbing Hill, Iowa. The couple made their home in Sloan, where they raised their two sons. Kathy worked for Cyclone Security in Sergeant Bluff, which was later bought out by Secure Solutions. She worked as security director and area manager for M.C.I.
In August 2005, she was instrumental in working with the Sergeant Bluff D.A.R.E. Officer, Curtis McLeod, conducting the I-Dent-A-Kid Program for the Sergeant Bluff-Luton Elementary and K-2 Schools.
Survivors include: her husband, Patrick; two sons, Joshua of Omaha and Zackary at home; her parents, LaVern and Ingeborg Roggatz of Anthon, Iowa; a brother and his wife, Dennis and Lori Roggatz of Bronson, Iowa; her father-in-law, Bill Ryan of Bronson; and other relatives, work associates, neighbors and good friends.
Kathy was preceded in death by her grandparents; and her mother-in-law, Marie Ryan.
LAWRENCE BALDWIN former Anthon resident passed away unexpectedly at his home in York, Nebraska on Thursday, June 15, 2006. He was 79 years old. Memorial services were held at Metz Mortuary Chapel in York on Thursday, June 22, 2006. Lawrence was born June 3, 1927 near Ponca, Nebraska to Milo F. and Ida R.(Dicks) Baldwin. The family later moved to Woodbury County southeast of Anthon.
Lawrence drove truck for Russell Miller Milling Company out of Sioux City for several years until he moved his family to York in 1967 where he operated a Truck Stop until 1976. He also worked at Sunflower Beef Packers in York until he retired. He enjoyed attending farm sales, raising livestock and following the markets. His favorite hobby was scrapping. He was also a veteran of Korea. On June 3, 1951 he married Norma Buck at Anthon, Iowa. The couple divorced and he later married Della Cunningham in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Lawrence is survived by three sons, Dan Baldwin, Larry and his wife Lynn Baldwin and Ken Baldwin all of York, Nebraska; two daughters Rynee Spencer of McCool Jct., and Sheila Baldwin of York; six Grandchildren; and four great Grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother Wesley and his wife Vera Baldwin of Anthon; a sister Bonnie Albers of Kingsley, Iowa and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Memorials may be directed to the Veterans Administration Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska. A private family burial will be held at a later time.
KEITH HEINSE 57 formerly of Anthon passed away on Wednesday, June 14, 2006 following a battle with cancer. Services: Friday, June 16, 2006 at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon. There was a flag presentation by the American Legion Post of Pierson, Iowa where Keith was an active member; after which there was a time for sharing of memories. Keith was also a member of teh Sioux City VFW. He coached soccer and led a Cub Scout troop in Moville. He also was active and headed up Legion baseball and had a Tug-Of-War team. He enjoyed fishing, camping, and spending time with his friends as well as watching NASCAR racing and spending time with his family. Keith was born to Bert and Luella (Hansen) Heinse on July 25, 1948 and attended school in Danbury and Anthon. He joined the U. S. Marine Corps after school and served in Vietnam as a squad leader. After his discharge from the service he returned home and married Jackie Dixon. The couple made their home in Moville. At the time of his death, Keith was part owner of Jeff's Bar Too in Moville. He and his companion Shelly Schweitzberger and their family made their home in Kingsley, Iowa. Survivors include his son Kirk Heinse of Moville, his mother; Luella Heinse of Anthon, one sister Peggy Pedersen of Anthon, his companion Shelly, and their family, Zach and Amber, Sarah, Jenni and Andrew, three grandchildren; and many nephews, nieces, and many friends. Keith was preceded in death by one son, Keith Michael Heinse, his father Bert Heinse and two nephews and one niece.
MARGARET M.(ROARK) ADLER 88 of Anthon passed away on Tuesday, May 30, 2006. Services: Friday June 2, 2006 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon with the Rev. Terry Roder officiating. Margaret Minnie Adler was the daughter of Edward and Lena (Petersen) Roark of Correctionville, Iowa and was born on December 2, 1917. The family lived near Correctionville until moving to a farm near Anthon. Margaret graduated from Anthon High School in 1936. She furthered her education by attending Westmar College in Le Mars, Iowa. She then taught country school. On Feb. 8, 1945, Margaret was united in marriage to Kenneth Frank Adler in Anthon. The couple farmed and raised their family near Anthon. Kenneth passed away on September 20, 1986 and Margaret moved into Anthon the following year. Her home since 2003 had been at the Correctionville Nursing and Rehab center. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She enjoyed visits from her grandchildren and great-grandchildren immensely and also enjoyed and kept busy with crocheting, working on crafts and reading. Survivors include three daughters and their husbands, twin daughters, Joan and Lewis Johnson of Valentine, Neb., and Judy and Lawrence Lansink of Ida Grove, Iowa, and JoAnn and Torrey Notz of El Dorado, Ark.; a son and his wife, Phillip and Deanna Adler of Anthon; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 15 great-step-grandchildren; three great-great-step-grandchildren; a sister, Juanita Rickabaugh of Belvedere, Illinois; and two sisters-in-law, Patricia Roark of Anthon and Margaret Roark of Emmetsburg, Iowa, and many nieces and nephews. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, one grandson; two brothers, Raymond and Richard both of Anthon; a brother-in-law, Everett Rickabaugh; and a son-in-law, Raymond Nollett.
OREN LEE BENTON formerly of Oto,Iowa an entrepreneur, from Colorado and a Woodbury County Iowa native who was known across the world for the impact he made and the people's lives he touched, passed away on Friday, May 19, 2006, in Greenwood Village, Colorado following a courageous three-year battle with cancer. Services: Friday May 26, 2006 at the Oto United Church of Christ in Oto. Burial will immediately follow the services. Oren was born in Oto, Iowa on March 10, 1934, he was valedictorian of his 11-member high school graduating class and married his childhood sweetheart, Beverly Coon; who lived about three miles down the road from the Benton family. After serving in the U.S. Army and graduating from the University of New Mexico in 1957 with a bachelor's in accounting, Oren had a 20-year career (1957-1976) as a CPA and tax partner with the accounting firm, Arthur Andersen & Co. in Denver, Colorado and Omaha, Nebraska. He was an independent entrepreneur and consultant for 10 years after leaving the firm. Starting in the late 1980s, Oren built a worldwide diversified portfolio of approximately 50 operating companies that employed several thousand people in 20 offices around the world. The portfolio included Denver-based NUEXCO, which until its bankruptcy in 1995, was the largest uranium trading operation in the world. The family of companies also included mining operations in uranium, gold and other minerals on several continents, a leading Colorado Springs-based semi-conductor memory development and manufacturing company and other technology development companies, commercial banks, mortgage, leasing and financial companies, real estate interests and a number of other public and private trading and service businesses. His most public investment was a significant ownership interest in the Colorado Rockies National League Baseball franchise. Not one for retirement, at the age of 61, Oren engaged in activities such as representing himself in legal issues related to the bankruptcy and helping develop Rockies Global Marketing, L.L.C. which specializes in the direct marketing of high-quality power tools. Although Oren lived most of his life in Colorado, he maintained close ties with family living in the area and the Oto community. His wife continues to maintain the Coon family farm and they enjoyed many extended visits, most recently during Oto's Sesquicentennial in 2004. Committed to the betterment of the community, when grain elevators located in downtown Oto deteriorated where he once worked as a young boy with his brothers and father, Oren purchased the property and cleaned up the area. He was also a member of American Legion Post 651 in Oto. In addition to his wife, Beverly, Oren is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Julia and Patrick Miller, Cynthia and William DePuy, Nancy and Kevin Jordan, Suzanne and Steve Mulligan, Jennifer and Todd Lacey and Jill and Brian Andrews; his grandchildren, Theodore DePuy, Kayla DePuy, Charles DePuy, Amanda Miller, Kristen Miller, Christopher Mulligan, Henry Mulligan, Elizabeth Mulligan, Janna Arenas, Jamie Arenas, Jenelle Arenas, Paige Lacey, Alexander Lacey and Kyle Andrews. Oren is also survivied by his siblings; Donna Stratton, Maurine Becker, Keith Benton, Clara Bolte and Vera Collins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernice and Edward Benton; and a brother, Wayne Benton. Memorials may be made in Oren's memory to the Colorado Cancer Research Program. LEO S. LYMAN Sr. 64, of Anthon died Monday, May 15, 2006, at his residence in Anthon after allegedly being shot by his wife June. She is being held in the Woodbury County Jail accused of the shooting and death of her husband. Services for Mr. Lyman: Friday, May 19, 2006 at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City. Leo was born to Arthur S. and Daisy (Mead) Lyman in Sioux City Iowa on Nov. 3, 1941. In November of 1959 he married Judith (Aeck) and the couple later divorced. In September of 1967 he married June Swanson in Sioux City. Leo and June lived in Anthon the last ten years or so in the home they had purchased; which was across the street from Wilson's Auto Shop. They had a home-based business. Survivors include his wife, June B. Lyman; five sons, Matthew and his wife, Alice of Iowa, Michael and his wife, Dixie of California, Robert and his wife, Lydia Auen of Colorado, David Lyman of Colorado and Leo Jr. and his wife, Kelly of Iowa; three daughters, Kathy Johnson of Alaska, Kathy Mann of Colorado and Cheryl and her husband, Keith Campbell of Iowa; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son; a stepdaughter, Sandy Meis; and two brothers, Jerry and Darrell Lyman.
LOWELL W. PATTISON 67, of Anthon, passed away on Friday, May 5, 2006 following a battle with cancer. Memorial services: Tuesday May 9, 2006 at Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon. Lowell Wayne Pattison was born to Orien and Bettina (Beard) Pattison on May 22, 1938 at Battle Creek, Iowa. He began his career in the newspaper business as a linotype operator; setting the type each week for the Anthon Herald. He then moved to Onawa, Iowa, and worked for three newspapers and in 1971 moved back to rural Anthon and worked at the Moville Record in Moville. Lowell made a career-changing decision and retired from the newspaper business in the 70's and became self-employed, doing landscaping and lawn care services as well as being an expert handyman. He mowed half of the lawns in Anthon and took pride in making each and every yard look its best; Lowell had extensive knowledge of lawn care and you could easily tell which lawns he took care of in the community. Lowell will be remembered by his son, Vincent "Pat" Pattison and his wife, Kim of Bear, Delaware; his daughter, Denise Boozer of Grand Forks, North Dakota; a brother, Roger Pattison and his wife, Gloria of Le Mars, Iowa; a sister, Sally Gildea and her husband, Dick of Kingman, Ariz.; his three grandchildren, Chris Ann Carlisle and Marshal and Skyler Boozer; his two great-grandchildren, Allana and Carissa Carlisle; and other family members, neighbors, and many friends and customers. Lowell was preceded in death by his parents. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be sent to June E. Nylen Cancer Center in Sioux City.
INEZ (GROTH) MANLEY 95, of Anthon passed away on Tuesday, April 11, 2006. A Funeral Mass was held on Monday April 17, 2006 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon, Iowa with final resting at Mt. St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Anthon, Iowa.
Inez Gertrude was born October 20, 1910 in Arlington Township, rural Moville, Iowa to John and Mary (Flynn) Franzen. The family moved west of Correctionville where Inez attended school. She was active in high school playing on the basketball team and graduated from Correctionville High School with the class of 1928. She continued her education and became a teacher. She taught school for one year before she married Elmer Henry Groth in Holstein, Iowa on April 27, 1929. Inez and Elmer farmed first near Cushing Iowa and then moved north of Climbing Hill, Iowa where they farmed and raised their family. In 1961 they moved to Anthon. Elmer passed away on November 10, 1975.
On June 6, 1981 Inez married Bernard F. Manley. The couple made their home here at Anthon and would have celebrated their 25th wedding anniverary this June.
Inez was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon for over 83 years! She was also active during that time with the St. Joseph Altar Society and the Catholic Daughters of America. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, McNiff Unit #389 of Anthon. She loved baking, cooking, playing cards, square dancing, and talking on the phone. She especially enjoyed her time with her family, which she supported with her love and duties as a mother, grandmother and great grandmother lovingly. She wintered in Texas for over 40 years with both her husbands. She belonged to "The Grandmother's Club" which included four ladies who for 40 years, got together and shared in each others lives and families.
Inez was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Elmer Groth, one grandchild, Curtis Groth, one great grandchild, McKenzie Inez Peters, two sisters, Alice Camarigg and Madge Waggoner, and one infant brother, Bernard.
She is survived by her husband, Bernie Manley of Anthon; five sons and their wives, Leo and CoeLeta Groth of Moville, Lyle and JoAnn Groth of Climbing Hill, LaVere and Macel Groth of Kansas City, Kansas, John and Bernice Lea Groth of Spearville, Kansas, and Mark and Ruth Groth of Anthon; one daughter and her husband LaDonna and Allen Peters of Osakis, Minnesota; four stepsons and their wives, Bill and Vera Manley of Akron, Iowa, Jack and Pat Manley of Littleton, Colorado, Gene and Carol Manley of South Sioux City, Nebraska, and Don and Jeanette Manley of Ralston, Nebraska; one step daughter Mary Frances Manley of Sioux City, Iowa; 19 grandchildren, 19 step-grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, 35 step great grandchildren, one great great grandchild; and four step great great grandchildren; three brothers-in-law, Don Ludvigson, Alfred Groth, and LaVern Groth; and two sisters-in-law, Geneva Bremer and Wilma Groth, along with many nieces and nephews, and many many friends.
PATRICK JOHN "P.J." O'CONNELL 70, of Apache Junction, AZ and Durango, CO, formerly of State College, PA, died on March 27, 2006 after being hit by a car while riding his bicycle near his home in Arizona.
P.J. was born on a family farm in rural Woodbury County, Iowa, on April 23, 1935 to Joseph and Rita Rourke O'Connell. He graduated from Anthon High School in 1952 and received a Bachelors in Journalism from Iowa State University in 1956 and a Masters/PhD from Penn State University in 1988. He served two years in the Army. He began his career at WCCO TV in Minneapolis, moved to WIIC and WQED in Pittsburgh, then finally to WPSX in State College, PA. There he produced over 100 documentary television programs focusing primarily on the American rural experience. He received the Peabody Award and later the Outstanding Local Production from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting for his film, "Visiting With Darlene," At Penn State he was also an associate professor of Speech Communication.
P.J. paddled the rivers of Pennsylvania, climbed mountains in Colorado, camped his family across the country, backpacked and rock climbed. He and his wife motorcycled PA back roads. In retirement, they traveled in Australia, China and extensively in Europe. He had been planning to attend his 50th Reunion at the Anthon High School in summer 2006 along with the Rourke Family Reunion.
Preceded in death by his parents, P.J. is survived by his wife of 48 years, Carolyn Greiner O'Connell of Apache Junction, AZ and his brother Mike O'Connell of Kansas City and his sister Maggie O'Connell Nolte of Mantorville, MN.
PJ and Carolyn had six children: Kathleen O'Connell of State College, Ellen Wham of Mt. Home, Idaho, Michael O'Connell of Concord, CA, Dan O'Connell of Elkton, MD, Joseph O'Connell of Bridgewater, NJ and Shannon O'Connell of Pittsburgh, PA. He has three sons in law: Michael Goldfine, Ben Wham and Kevin Drobish, and two daughters in law: Trudi O'Connell and Tami O'Connell, in addition to seven grandchildren: Mat Schilling, Jennifer Wham, Kelson Goldfine, Elizabeth Wham, Christopher O'Connell, Jael Goldfine and Kaitlyn O'Connell.
A memorial service will be held at the Pueblo Manor Clubhouse in Apache Junction, AZ on Fri, March 31 at 2pm. ETHEL WISE 100, of Akron, Colorado and formerly of Oto,Iowa passed away on Saturday, March 4, 2006.
NOEL A. KRAGNESS 69, of Sigourney, Iowa and formerly of Anthon passed away on Friday, March 3, 2006 at the Keokuk County Health Center in Sigourney following a courageous battle with Muscular Dystrophy. Funeral services: March 7, 2006 at Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel, Sigourney, Iowa. Burial will be at a later date in Vermillion Cemetery, Vermillion, South Dakota. Noel was born August 9, 1936, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Oscar and Hazel (Criswell) Kragness. He graduated from Leeds High School in 1954 and the University of South Dakota in 1958 with a B.S. degree in Engineering. In June of 1958 he married Marilyn Randolph in Vermillion, South Dakota. To this union three children were born; David, Brian and Donna. Noel worked as an engineer at Murray Iron Works in Burlington, Iowa for eight years. On January 30, 1965, he married Martha Perkins in Bussey, Iowa. Noel, Marty and the children moved back to the Sioux City area in 1966 where Noel earned his teaching certificate at Morningside College. He then taught Chemistry, Physics, Math and Senior Seminar at Eastwood High School in Correctionville, Iowa for 25 years before retiring due to his health. He and Marty moved to Sigourney in 1998. Noel was a member of the Sigourney United Methodist Church and was a man of great intelligence who had many interests, including hunting and fretwork. He also had a unique sense of humor. Survivors include his wife: Marty Kragness of Sigourney; three children: David Kragness of Omaha, Nebraska, Brian Kragness and wife Sara of Vancouver, Washington and Donna Kehoe and husband Joe of Birchwood, Wisconsin and two grandchildren: Bryce and Sabrina Kragness. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Marilyn as well as a daughter-in-law, Tamara Kragness. A time of sharing will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 7, 2006, at the Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established to the Gideons. Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service in Sigourney is handling the arrangements.
WALTER WESTENDORF of Smithland, the founder of Westendorf Manufacturing Co. Inc. of Onawa, Iowa passed away on Monday, February 27, 2006.Services: Monday, March 6, 2006 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oto, Iowa. Burial: St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, rural Oto. Walter is survived by a daughter and her husband, Joy and Leo McCarthy of Dubuque, Iowa; a daughter, Elaine Martin of Omaha; a son and his wife, Neal and Shirley Westendorf of Dakota Dunes, S.D.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Louis Westendorf of Carroll, Iowa; nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends. Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Arley in 1995; a son-in-law, Dennis Martin in 2005; a brother, Albert Westendorf; and one adopted sister, Sister Audrey Gray. The family requests that memorials be directed to the Rural Families in Crisis Program established by Walter through the Diocese of Sioux City, Public Parks and Recreation Program for the city of Smithland and to the Serra Club of Omaha for televised masses.
JOHN W. COLE 88, of Kingsley, formerly of Anthon passed away on Sunday, February 26, 2006. Services:Thursday, March 2, 2006 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Kingsley, with burial in Kingsley. John was born to Al and Annie (Coyne) Cole on a farm near Oto, Iowa on June 21, 1917. He graduated from Anthon Community School and went to work at Mike's Market in Anthon. He moved to Kingsley in 1939 and he and brother Bernard ran Cole's Market there for 40 years. John married Phyllis Hodgen in Kingsley on October 19, 1944. He served four years with the U.S. Army during W.W. II and owned Cole's Variety Store for 10 years. He served as a substitute mail carrier for over 18 years as well. John was very active in the Kingsley community and served on the steering committee for their Diamond Jubilee, was a former commander of American Legion Nash Post 140 as well as being a member of that Post for over 60 years. He was also a Past President of the Kingsley Commercial Club. He is survived by two daughters, Suzanne McMahon of DeWitt, Iowa, and Michelle Cole of Chicago, Illinois; a son Mike of Townsend Montana, six grandchildren, one great-grandchild, a brother in law Max Hodgen, many nieces and nephews and special friends, Dale and Betty Murray of Kingsley. He was preceded in death by his wife Phyllis, who passed away on November 2, 2002, his parents, three brothers, Bernard, Leo and Raphael; a granddaughter, a nephew, four sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law. Memorials may be directed to St. Michael's Catholic Church or the Kingsley Nursing and Rehab Center.
ALEX PARKER
On Wednesday, February 22, 2006 another tragedy struck our community with the accidental shooting of one of Anthon's finest young teenagers.
ALEX PARKER, the son of Lloyd and Jody Parker and brother of Keith and Jake Parker of rural Anthon, and a junior at Maple Valley Anthon-Oto High School in Mapleton, Iowa was accidently shot and succumbed to his injuries on Thursday morning, February 23, 2006.
We have heard this young man described as " a role model," "a good kid," "a super nice boy," "a great athlete," "a good friend," and we are sure that in this whole valley, as well as the whole school district there would only be praises sung about Alex. He touched so many people's lives during his time here. His spirit will live on!
If anyone would like to leave a message on the guest book about Alex, for Alex, or for his family - go ahead. We know he will definitely be missed, and never forgotten. Our thoughts and prayers are with Alex's family as well as all of his many friends, and classmates.

CARRIE LIVERMORE 91, of Anthon, passed away on Friday, February 17, 2006. Services were held Friday, March 3, at the Oto United Church of Christ in Oto, with Burial at Oak Hill Cemetery, at Anthon. She was born to George and Ida (Beaver) Mason on April 3, 1914 in O'Neill, Nebraska. She married Walter Livermore on October 24, 1934 and the couple lived in Oto most of their lives. Carrie was a part-time telephone operator and also worked in her sister's cafe. She and Walter moved to Anthon in 1984. He passed away on December 27, 1997. She was a member of the Oto United Church of Christ and belonged to the Ladies Mite Society. Survivors include one daughter Mary Esther and her husband Kenneth Hill of Anthon, two grandchildren; Brian and his wife Faye Hill, and Debra and her husband Chauncey Wilson all of Anthon; four great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Carrie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter on December 27, 1997, two brothers, Dale and Keith Manson, four sisters, Wilma Dicus, Betty Zerfing, Mildred Manson and Doris Schmidt.
JANET K. MICHENER , 69, of Kingsley, formerly of Anthon, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, January 29, 2006, at the Kingsley nursing home. Memorial services will be held on Friday, February 3, 2006 at Christy-Smith McCulloch Chapel in Moville, Iowa. Burial will be at a later date in Arlington Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home. Janet was born on May 22, 1936 at Blair, Nebraska to Lars and Lena (Jespersen) Jensen. The family moved to Iowa where Janet grew up; near Aurelia. She graduated from Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa and taught school for a few years. On August 17, 1962 she was united in marriage to Gary Michener in Storm Lake, Iowa. The couple moved to California for a year, then moved back to the Anthon area where they began farming. Janet and Gary were a team on the farm and raised their daughters together there. Janet was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star chapter in Anthon, the Garden Club and the United Church of Christ in Oto, Iowa. She enjoyed her family, gardening, canning and cooking. Survivors include two daughters, Ann and her husband Jay Hardy of Redwood City, California, and Kim and her husband Mo Emami of Fort Collins, Colorado; two grandchildren, Farrah and Zoya Emami; and a sister, Bette Morgan of Austin, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband Gary, who died unexpectedly on September 22, 2005; her parents, and two brothers, Guy and Vernon Jensen.
DOROTHY DEVE PETERSEN ,94 of Cedar Falls, Iowa and formerly of Anthon passed away on Thursday, January 26, 2006 of pneumonia at Sartori Memorial Hospital. Memorial services were held on January 2, 2006.
Dorothy was born September 18, 1911, at Pierson, Iowa, the daughter of William and Ethel Fey. She married John H. Petersen on June 30, 1932 at Rock Branch Methodist Church in rural Woodbury County. John passed away on May 9, 1986.
Dorothy graduated from Anthon High School in 1929 and received an Iowa Teaching Certificate from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa. She taught in rural schools in Woodbury County for many years.
Dorothy and John owed and operated the Coast to Coast store in Anthon for a number of years. After selling their business they worked in hardware stores in Sioux City, Moville and Le Mars until moving to Cedar Falls in 1979.
It was in August of 2005 that Dorothy moved to Cedar Falls Lutheran Home in Cedar Falls. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Cedar Falls.
Survivors include two daughters, Delores and husband Richard Lynch of Cedar Falls, and Joan and husband Donald Smith of Edwardsville, Kansas, one son, Steven and his wife Jolene Petersen of Independence, Iowa, eight grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband John, her parents, one brother Donald Fey and an infant grandson.
ARCHIE C. LYON, 81, formerly of Anthon, and Burke, South Dakota and a resident of LeMars, Iowa passed away on January 4, 2006 after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. Archie was born on May 1, 1924 in Correctionville to Frank and Willa (Therien) Lyon. He was a life-long beekeeper in the business his father began in the 1930's near Anthon. Archie loved being a beekeeper and will be remembered for his strong work ethic and great knowledge of the industry. After being in business and a partnership with his brother Charlie, he went into business with his two sons; Randy and Ron Lyon. Their business expanded in South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota and as far south as Texas.
On November 10, 1945 Archie married Neola Bennett in Anthon. Archie and Neola were the proud parents of three children; Ron, Lynn, and Randy. Survivors include his wife of 60 years; Neola; a son Ron Lyon of Spring Valley, Minnesota, a daughter Lynn and her husband Hakan Fransson of Raleigh, North Carolina; six grandchildren; one brother Frank Lyon of Kansas City, Missouri; one sister, Annie and her husband, Claire Wulff of Mineola, Texas; a daughter-in-law, Leigh Lyon of Burke, South Dakota, and a sister-in-law Mary Jo Lyon of Anthon.
Archie was preceded in death by his parents; one son Randy Lyon of Burke, South Dakota, two brothers; Charlie of Anthon and Lee Lyon of Springfield, Ohio; a sister Elsie of Spokane, Washington. Archie will be greatly missed by all who knew him and his sense of humor which was so funny.
Private family services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home, Burke, South Dakota.

GARY ALLEN YOCKEY 65, of Holstein, Iowa passed away on Friday, December 2, 2005 in Wyoming, Iowa, while attending his father-in-law's passing. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 7, at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Holstein, Iowa with Pastor Curtis Benson officiating. Burial will be in Holstein Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Barker Funeral Home in Holstein. The son of Gerald and Gertrude (Drossel) Yockey; Gary was born on November 24, 1940, near Anthon, Iowa. He attended country school and graduated from Anthon High School with the class of 1958. He attended college in Omaha, Nebraska. He married Virginia Backhaus in 1960. The couple had three children; Ranae, Rhonda and Todd. Gary married Judy M. Petersen on December 5, 1970, while living in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They had two children, Terry and Gerald (Chris) Yockey. Gary and Judy moved to Washta, Iowa in 1976. He worked at Wilson's Packing Plant in Cherokee, Iowa and helped on his parents farm. In 1981, he established Washta Insurance after an apprenticeship with Sid Gustafson in Paullina. The family moved to Holstein in 1991 and relocated their office as Yockey Insurance, Inc. Gerald (Chris) joined the office in management in 2000. Gary was a very devoted man to his family, hobbies and career. He enjoyed his family and, most of all, his seven grandchildren. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, snowmobiling, water skiing, music and especially boating in the summer. Each year he and Judy would take the grandchildren to their summer home at Okoboji, Iowa for one week and spoil them rotten. Gary truly sensed the needs of others and would put them first. Gary and Judy served as legal guardians the last several years for a good friend, Jarroll Otto. Gary was a member of the Kiwanis Club, Pheasants Forever and the Cattlemen's Association. He served on the board of directors for Mid-Step Services for over 10 years and the National Crop Insurance. He started an insurance-based software support group, Applied Systems. He also had the honor of serving as past president of the Professional Insurance Agents. Survivors include his wife, Judy; children Dr. Ranae (Larry Orrico) Yockey-Orrico of Chicago, Illinois, Rhonda (Dr. Scott) Anderson of Bellevue, Iowa and Gerald (Chris) and Amy Yockey of Holstein, Iowa; a sister, Joane (Pat) Cole of Huxley, Iowa; grandchildren, Rebecca, Matthew, Lucas and Marcus Anderson, Nathan and Hannah Yockey and Chaz Orrico; and his mother-in-law, Betty Petersen. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Todd Yockey and Terry Yockey and his father-in-law.
MARY AGNES (CRILLY) BURKE 87, passed away on October 9, 2005. A former resident of Sioux City, and most recently of San Juan Capistrano, California. Mary was well known in our community for more than 70 years.
Born in Anthon, Iowa, July 31, 1918, she was the fourth child born to Hugh and Florence Crilly. She was raised on the family farm and attended Anthon schools and graduated from Cathedral High School in Sioux City. Mary was a member of Immaculate Conception Church for years, and later Cathedral parish. Memories will be cherished of her devotion to her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Her giving nature and genuine goodwill for friends and neighbors will leave a warm place in many hearts. She is survived by her children, Mike and daughter-in-law, Carol, Alice Burke, and Joanne Burke Stager and son-in-law, John; five grandchildren, two great grand daughters, and two great grandsons, all who reside in Southern California. Also a brother, Mike Crilly; three sisters, Pauline Sorensen, Sr. Alice Marie Crilly, Eileen Renneker, and millions of nieces and nephews (all of them her favorite). She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers; Francis, Wayne, Ralph, Gene, and her sister, Nell, as well as husband Vincent S. Burke, infant son, James Michael, and granddaughter Lora Ann. Mary was a member of Saint Irenaeus church, Cypress, California. Services were held there on October 13, 2005. Pallbearers were: Jim and Peter Burke (grandsons), Ruth Crilly (niece), Gary Crilly (nephew), Steve Farrington and Robert Griggs (friends). She was buried at Forest Lawn, in Cypress, California, under a bright blue sky, a multitude of flowers, and surrounded by friends and family.
JUNE WODTKE 77, of rural Anthon passed away on Friday, Oct. 7, 2005, at her home. Memorial services were held Saturday, October 15, 2005 at Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon.
