Anthon-Oto Alumni Plans for Flag Storage

About twenty years ago, the Anthon-Oto alumni  started an Avenue of Flags to be displayed during the Anthon-Oto Alumni weekend. At that time the banquet was being held in the Anthon-Oto school and the flags were displayed in front of the school building. The first year there were about 10 flags that graced the entrance of the school. Interest grew in the Avenue of Flags and each year as many as 10 to 15 flags were added to the growing avenue.
The banquet was moved to the Anthon Community Center and by the end of 2013, there were a total of 270 flags that lined the front of the Center as well as all the streets surrounding the center.
Flags have been given in honor of and in memory of alumni members and others with ties to the community. What used to be a one man job putting them up has turned into 8-10 people every June spending several hours putting flags up.  An electric fence post is pounded into the ground first and then the flag attached to a 3 foot piece of metal electric conduit is put over the fence post. Also attached to the flag is a wooden name plate with the recipient and the giver of the flag attached to the wooden plate.
Marvin Hanson has been the leader of the flag project every year and he not only makes the wooden name plates, but also puts the flag together, and makes sure that each flag is ready to be displayed. His volunteers meet on the fourth Saturday morning of June,  put the flags up, and enjoy coffee and cinnamon rolls provided by Eunice Clause.
To date, the flags have had many homes. In the beginning, they were stored on the stage in the school. When the banquet moved up to the Community Center, the alumni was thankful to receive a two wheel trailer from Ron Hayworth and the flags could be taken down, rolled up and put in the trailer and backed into a building. They have been moved from building to building as people have had room for them, but it’s time to find a permanent home for this valuable asset to the community.
The alumni board approached the town about putting a building behind the community Center that would house the trailer. At the same time the Community Center was discussing the need for a building that would house extra tables and chairs because storage in the community center is very limited.
With a contribution from the Community Center Board, the alumni board, the Anthon Quasquicentennial committee and a memorial donation from Joe Harbaugh in memory of Diane, the fund has begun for a new building. We are asking for donations from alumni members or community members who would like to donate either to the Community Center, the Alumni Avenue of Flags or to the Diane Harbaugh Memorial Fund.  The building will be a memorial to Diane. All donations may be sent to the Anthon-Oto Alumni, Box 135, Anthon, IA 51004 or may be given to any of the officers, Judy Hayworth, Jerane Hayworth, Sally Forch, Joan Meister or Shirley Nelson. If you are mailing a check, please note on the bottom of the check if you would like to designate it specifically.
The alumni board hopes that the building can be in place by the end of June 2014 for the 33rd annual alumni banquet.
