About the Anthon-Oto Recreational Ball Program
The youth summer ball program was through the school until 1985, when due to lack of funding, it was no longer able to go through the school. Community members met to come up with a plan to keep the ball program active, and this was the beginning of the Anthon-Oto Recreational Ball program.
Over the years it expanded from just the summer ball, and now offers sports practically year round with t-ball, coach pitch, softball, and baseball during some of the spring and summer months. Fall soccer and football, and basketball over the winter. In the past they offered youth wrestling and for a few years they had an indoor Spring soccer league with Holstein and Correctionville.
Fall soccer in Anthon kicked off for the first time in 2004. While just getting the sport going in town and seeing if there was enough interest, tie dyed shirts were made to divide the group into Red, Blue, Purple, and Green teams. It was originally offered to kids of preschool age up through 6th grade, and then later on 7th and 8th graders were able to participate too. It proved to be a popular sport with Anthon and Oto kids, having increasing numbers every fall. There were 60 soccer members in 2006 and in 2009 there were over 70.
Numerous volunteers over the years have helped make the ball program successful by helping with the concession stand, coaching, maintaining and marking the ball fields for little league and soccer fields, and many other tasks to make it possible to have Anthon-Oto teams.
