In the fall of 2004, Mr. Richard Hamann approached the City Council with his desire to build and furnish a new library for the City of Anthon. In October of 2004, land was purchased east of the Medical Clinic and ground was broken. In the spring of 2005, construction began and on October 15th of that same year a dedication ceremony was held and the library opened the following Monday, October 17th.
The library is now 2,478 square feet and is handicapped accessible throughout. There is a meeting room that has been the gathering place for many groups and organizations. The library is home to a growing selection of fiction and non-fiction books for adults and children, videos, DVDs, audiocassettes & CDs (adult & children), periodicals, and five Gateway computers (a generous donation made by the Waitt family of Sioux City, Iowa). Programs and services still offered include Children’s Summer Reading Program, Children’s Story Hour, Children’s Treasure Chest of Reading, Bicycle Safety Program conducted by the Woodbury County Sherriff’s Department, posters decorated by the elementary students at school for National Library Week, rotating collection from Woodbury County Library, rotating collection from Decorah Public Library, access to statewide collections through the Northwest Regional Library (Interlibrary Loan), adult book discussion group, Saturday afternoon movies, copy machine, and a Gifts and Memorial Trust Fund.
The library hosts its own website: www.anthon.lib.ia.us. The Library’s main goal continues to be to improve and move forward, adding new programs and services the community wants and needs and to more to the community than just a building with books.
